We started importing more Made in Vietnam clothes that competed with Chinese goods.

Tariffs are mostly a corporate tax taking money out of profit margins.

If it is like clothing which doesn't have high profit margins then the cost of manufacturing has to go down.

China abuses their currency to counter this. Lowering the value of their dollar. 1 USD buys X amount of clothing. Then after manipulation 1 USD buys X+1 amount of clothing.

Also manufacturing in the US doesn't mean things are more expensive, but that there is smaller profit margins.

The CEOs make less money in the US and workers make more, while the product stays relatively the same price. Maybe slightly more, but still staying competitive.
Ask your parents if things costed more or less in the US in the 1970s when we manufactured everything ourselves.
The answer is less and the median household made more relative to CEOs.
Ultimately the average household makes more money.
Even if the good is slightly more expensive it would balance out.

They find alternatives, a new alternative is made and provided elsewhere, or they forsake whatever said product is. What smart companies do, in all reality, since NOT doing business with the US isn't an option (no sane company wants to let go of the US market since its rampant consumerism monstrously dwarfs the rest of the planet and makes it the easiest country to make money off of), is maintaining the current price point, or even reducing it in some cases (almost all imported goods have unnecessarily inflated prices in the first place).

This is only half right. Because that’s not the only or even the most import reason it’s so fucking retarded. It’s that even if it fucking *did* make economic sense it would be fucking impossible to completely restructure the entire US economy into being a manufacturing hub instead of what we are: the largest base of consumers who’s primary function in the equilibrium of the established global economy is to buy all the foreign goods produced by other countries.

It would take *decades* to restructure ourselves and for what? It would be long and painful, and so many people would have to become homeless and die in the process because in addition to all of that they’re also simultaneously gutting any and all social safety nets and laying off millions of people. So what do we get for all of that sacrafice? Nothing.

Even if absolutely *EVERYTHING* in Trump’s ridiculous plan actually did work (again, it’s literally impossible, so it can’t) the thing that it’s trying to accomplish- bringing back “respectable blue collar jobs” or whatever back to the US- yeah we’re talking about like 4 new jobs here, not the 75 million or so we’d need to replace for all the previously employed people he just fired. Like coal mining? Auto manufacturering? All that shit is so heavily automated it’s just not even remotely a viable alternative for that many people.

I think it's fair to say these tariffs don't seem particularly well-targeted, though, and the harm to consumers will outweigh the benefit to producers; even the raw materials used in manufacturing (some of which literally do not exist in the boundaries of the US) now face tariffs.

Tariffs are pro-worker, not pro-consumer. They'll depress spending in certain sectors, companies will make less money in the short-term. Working class people will benefit the most from the return of manufacturing. Pair that with anti-immigrant policy and you'll have natural upward pressure on wages for these new jobs. It hurts the multinational companies, they're forced to spend more on labor. It's such a clear lane and like the only pro-worker federal policy I've seen in my lifetime.

The reason we import things from other countries we theoretically could manufacture here isn’t because we’re stupid and are unaware of that. It’s a trade off.

I’ll give you a really basic example. One of our biggest trading partners is Canada, and one of the top things we buy from them is lumber. Now we have plenty of trees here in the US, and even if we didn’t, we have so much space we could simply plant them ourselves and stop wasting money buying them right.

Wrong. In addition to the trees produced in Canada being heartier due to the colder climate causing them to produce harder and stronger wood for building materials, we save money over all by simply importing them because not nearly all our available land could be effectively used for that, and the things we actually *do* use the people and space that would require are infinitely more profitable.

This is why the concept of “trade” was invented hundreds of thousands of years ago. Every civilization in the history of civilization has participated in it for literally this exact reason. Hope this helps.
