I just got Cold War and Battle for Normandy. Never played this series before, going through the video tutorials is gonna take me forever.

i'm not sure but world of warcraft private servers back in the day were full blown 1488. you could type quite literally anything you wanted without consequence. there were plenty of guilds dedicated to just hanging out, shooting the shit over esoteric topics and being racist. there's no way they're around anymore with everything moving to pozzed shit like discord but I haven't been fucked to check

Rimworld. The dlcs are expensive but Ideology pretty much enables a nazi ethnostate, and there's badass mods.
The game's a storytelling generator in concept, but plays like a topdown 2D sims mixed with Minecraft and realtime tactical shooters.
You can carve up black people and turn them into human leather cowboy hats which are very profitable. The game can penalise you if you fucked your settings up. It'll reward you if you didn't, because the dev doesn't pick sides.
Many mods are based but some can be degenerate. I enjoyed a mod that offered custom overpowered genetic experimental organs, but drew the line at muffalo udders which you can transplant into any colonist for a free 15 milk per day. Putting them into prisoners however, royally based.

dlc folders can be dragged and dropped from a pirated copy and it still works as normal if you just have the base game

I'm not even a boomer. I used to read the Flare Path on RPS and I always loved community combat mission and the stories he came up with. Never bought it because Battlefront was still charging like 40 bucks for CM1 games. Then TFP got kicked off of RPS for dabbing on trannies and around the same time CM1 games went on GoG for 4 bucks each and I knew I had to try. Still haven't played any wargames or RTS's that feel as real and dynamic as CM. The AI holds up and every encounter is a new story. The absolute ecstasy of getting your one light AT gun over a hill in place to kill a surprise early war T34 that showed up on turn 20 to fuck your flanking infantry is just unmatched, winning against the AI has a value that just isn't present in a lot of games. It satisfies my autism.

CM2 games are pretty good too but I can't stand that they usually only cover a few months of the war, heavy armor combined arms is not as fun as early war silliness.

It's pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it. The friendly AI does a pretty good job of not being mindless even if you don't give it super specific orders. The only thing is trying to remember all the fucking hotkeys. You'll also find yourself going to bed at 2am because you got too involved in 1 single skirmish, it's so easy to get absorbed, it's great.

Newest in a series. You can directly fly a ship or just give commands, empire build, affect current powers, pretty open world with some relatively short mission lines to influence things on a large scale. Not exactly Kenshi in design, but similar.

I've never really "gotten" crusader kings. Every talks about how complex it is but I've always thought that the gameplay loop is rather simple. I definitely appreciate the emergent storytelling aspect but as far as the actual tools that drive it just bore. You kill and fuck and make friends or enemies with people, occasionally try to kill someone, and play the most and boring war mini game possible. It gets old pretty quick, what am I missing?

Another CM enjoyer. Based. WeGo is so much more fun than the standard RTS formula because it allows a good realtime simulation while getting rid of the adderall zoomzoom high speed micromanagement that makes getting involved with what's actually going on impossible. It's also a fun bit of and realism when something interrupts the intent of your order and you can't immediately respond to it while your troops have to fend for themselves.

Yeah, I never heard it called WeGo, but yeah it was really a cool concept and as far as I know it was the first game of that type, or at least the first that was 3D. It was just so much fun having to consider the terrain, you had little towns and buildings, it was revolutionary loved it

Based. Shame no one's on anymore, this was the peak of online shooter atmosphere, the community was great. The new wave of tactical shooters is lame, they're filled with autismos, the gameplay loops are worse, and everyone acts like they're actually in the military. I tried hell let loose but it was sooooooo slow. RO2 had the sense to have you almost always in the action if you wanted it, with enough of a respawn punishment to stop straight up TDM chaos. Wave after wave storming station or the church on spartanovka was pure kino. The upgrade system was also brilliantly understated, something we'll never get again in the fortnite era. See a squad leader with rolled sleeves or a gunner with an MG42 and belts and you knew you were fighting with a god.

Europa Barbarorum 2 for M2TW. It's probably the single most high effort mod ever made and it's still ostensibly being worked on. It's an extremely accurate recreation of the post-alexandrian Mediterranean/Eurooean world, with tons of unique units and unique governments for every playable faction. It's amazing what they've forced out of the M2TW engine really. Sieges still suck ass but they always have. There's probably been more effort put into developing EB2 than everything CA has released since the original Warhammer TW desu.
