Due to strategic alliances, the US would have a much easier time invading China than China would have invading the US in terms of the logistics of actually getting and supplying boots on the ground, but an invasion of China with its population would be a complete shitshow with anything less than scorched earth warcrimes tier warfare because of the sheer size of their population. Meanwhile, China realistically can't invade the US without dealing with Japan first at a bare minimum otherwise their supply lines across the Pacific would a mess.

Of all the old policies of old communist China they have cast aside, the strategic importance of being able to feed your people without imports was one they should have kept.

While I agree with your point overall, I would point out that LA and New York specifically would greatly impact other metropolis due to them being major import sites for trade. New York blowing up would basically stop dead an absolutely huge chunk of the american economy because thats where all of the shipping on the east coast went. Same for LA on the west coast.

We can survive and adapt to such losses, but thats still a significant injury.
