I'm $150k last I checked, and I want to die. I'm one of those people with large savings and low income (relative to cost of living). So I have very little free cash, and losing $150k is like losing 10 years of savings.

When they say they got liquidated it means they're trading with leverage which means they don't actually have the money. If you have $100,000 and trade with 5x leverage it means the brokerage with lend you $400,000 to trade with. But if you start losing too much they will forcibly liquidate your positions before it gets worse. They know you can't afford to pay back deep losses so they'd rather sell your position, take what they can get back, and tell you you owe them the rest.
It's not a problem if you invest with your own money, because no one can force a sale and you can just hold until the market goes back up.

Timing the bottom is a losing mans game just hold or buy more lower.

You can use options spreads to bet on the top "slice" of the stocks price, but if the stock moves in the direction opposite of your bet you can lose 100% of your investment despite only dropping 10%

They're also using "margin" which is borrowing money from their broker to multiply their position.

The problem is, when the market moves in the direction counter to your bet, you can lose 100% of the investment on 10% swing, and then they margin called by their broker and are forced to liquidate their other positions at a loss, etc
