What do you think carbon dioxide is? CO2. We breathe O2. It's very easy to recycle the CO2 back into breathable oxygen. And regardless of whether the ISS is technically "in space" or not, there's no air outside it. They have all their air sent to them, and they recycle it, with periodic shipments of O2 to replenish what can't be recycled. But also, 400lbs of O2 a year isn't that big. Assuming a ~3 year mission, 9 months there, 15 months on mars, 9 months back, that's only 1200lbs of O2, which can be compressed to a trivially small volume using ordinary oxygen tanks.
