Coal is more expensive than Solar and Wind though, the non-meme ones like FV pannels and wind turbines at least, the problem is that in order to have a reliable power supply you need generators capable of operating at any time, Solar produces energy for 8 hours and Wind turbines can only operable between a fixed range of wind speed, the Coal power plant on the other hand can operate 24/7 at maximum power as long as you can pump coal into it, and besides, there's a bunch of other parameters required to operate a power grid like inertia and extra power to balance the load and the generation which Renewables simply can't do effectively and not having them will fuck up your grid electrical frequency and resilience against any kind of of failure, the chinaman works 24/7 which is why you need a stable source of power, for that you have to pick between Coal, Gas, Diesel and Nuclear, and Coal is the cheapest of those

I actually did some digging and found most coal plants in China are funded by coal mining companies and China maintains a high level of subsidisation for coal power plants. When the state decides to put its fingers on the scale then coal is competitive, the same way it is here, but without subsidies coal gets btfo.
