I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve explained everything in this board. The tariffs are leverage used to control foreign nations policies regarding both their tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers, namely, currency manipulation and regulation that inhibits American exports and thus American production. The point is to make it so expensive to produce in these countries and export to America, that some firms will just come to America produce here to avoid that and the foreign countries will want to come and negotiate their other trade barriers, effectively permanently destroying the competitive advantage they had that let them steal industry or handicap American production in the first place. It’s that simple. All this shit about U.S. treasuries, the stock market, that’s all background noise. The treasuries market is just overlevered buyers de-risking so they don’t get margin called and the stock market is just investors arbitraging short term price shocks.

And to be clear, the goal is not necessarily some kind of industrial renaissance in America. If that happens, great, but it’s not necessary. At a minimum, a successful outcome would include reshoring of mission critical industry such as semiconductors, the stuff that goes into weapons systems, pharmaceuticals, stuff like this. Everything else that we get back is gravy.

Tariffs make it harder for outside businesses to compete against American made and owned businesses. The strategy here is to create a fertile ground in which new American businesses can be started up and thrive.
