but as an example of an answer, i can change each side by moving 1's around pretty easy, for example i can take 1 off the 2 and make both sides look like 5+1, and i haven't solved anything
also, i can subtract 5 from both sides and then subtract 1 from both sides, which isn't solving both sides but leads to the 0 identity and is technically an answer
or i could just say no, i don't know how to do this because the easiest path is to simplify both sides

I use these algorithms in my head all the time and I’ve been doing this since elementary school. Not a lot of kids did well in math. Managed to get a degree in engineering and I can tell you this, I may not use math anymore, but I still use common core in my everyday life.
