An old pilot once told me airplanes generally like to fly themselves, as in: you can glide down a powerless aircraft, big or small, and there are many such cases. I know choppers auto-rotate, but it isn't the same and it always seems to be catastrophic more often than not with a helicopter. Just becomes dead-weight like we see.
