I have a 10 acre homestead. We're not self-sufficient as a family of four. I've got a dozen raised beds that are 10'x3x' plus a 400 sqft coldframe and a 600 sqft greenhouse with a wood burning stove. Not to mention the 30 fruit trees and dozens of berry bushes. We keep turkeys, chickens, pigs and goats. We don't have enough land for cattle or even a dairy cow. The only red meat we get from outside the supermarket comes during deer season.
We still have to buy flour (a quarter acre of wheat when we first moved in produced a comically small yield of flour) and sugar (we did make sugar out of sugar beets two years ago as an experiment and it worked, but it was way too much effort just like the wheat). We also buy vegetables and fruits when they're out-of-season for us. For example, right now, I've got so much asparagus it's insane, but you can't really freeze it and canning it is not pleasant. So if I want asparagus in August, I'm buying it from the store.
And lets not talk about the hours. I own my own business so I can come do work outside as needed because I control my hours. My wife stays home with the kids so she can work outside as well. The reality is our property is literally a second job with absolute shit-tier pay. It's nothing like TV shows ('Homestead Rescue') or shitty YouTube channels portray it as. It's a lot of work. At least it's fun though.
