I'm just going to go ahead and toss out the places with completely fucked state governments- CA, IL, the entire North East, WA, OR, CO, etc.

Midwest- decent laws, good demographics, poor boring gay natural landscape, harsh winters, no beaches etc.

Certain areas of the South West have a beautiful landscape, and I actually like the climate but they are a fairly long way away from the beaches and I imagine once you get past the initial appeal of being in the desert biomes it gets old fairly fast. The laws there are hit or miss. Poor demographics, a ton of mexicans etc.

The Gulf Coast Southeast. Interesting plant life and wildlife, close to the Gulf tropical beaches, greenhouse climate with a few hard frosts in the winter. Cons are the heat bugs and it is totally flat. Terrible demographics. The laws there are probably the best in the country.

Rust belt, decent landscapes and lakes etc., harsh winters, no real beaches, decent demographics in many places, laws are just so so.

If I had to choose a single worst state in the US it would probably be New Jersey, Minnesota, or Illinois. If I had to choose the best it would probably be Florida, North Carolina, or Idaho. Florida is definitely hard mode, but the laws are good, it is interesting and bizarre, tropical beaches, cool landscape, etc.

Florida has pretty good laws. I dont live in FL but I spend alot of time there- the tax situation there is good, the gun laws are good it's pretty decent when you just look at how it actually is for a normal person day to day there from a state governnent perspective.

Your Atlantic coast is like a cold murky dump compared to the tropical gulf beaches. Your wetlands pale in comparison to those South of you. Your plant and animal life is very flat and mediocre compared to other regions of the country. I have a fairly strong regional sentiment, but I have no state sentiment at all btw. That mid Atlantic region isn't the worst in the country as far as natural landscape goes but it is in the middle of the pack at best. Nothing to write home about.

I drove from Ohio to Duluth, Winnipeg, Missoula in the winter. It is the best time to camp. Loved the birch forests in Michigan. Lovely towns with fireplaces burning in the libraries up north on the great Lakes.

I personally think for the outdoors the the gulf coast is fantastic particularly the north florida area. Great beaches, deep sea fishing, great bass fishing, top notch turkey hunting in the spring. There are alot of natural springs and blue holes there. Kayaking in those springs is unlike anything else in the world tbqh.

The problem is that it isn't set up for a tourist. There is no one single national park area like there are with other regions. You have to know where to go and alot of the best places are on private land. The heat and humidity is no joke if you aren't used to it. If I was to plan an outdoors trip in the region I would recommend flying into like Panama City airport (lol) then renting a car and renting a place on a small beach east of Panama City. Then I'd drive up to Apalachicola National Forest and spend some time, then I'd go to maybe Torreya state park, Tate's Hell etc. one day, then I'd go do some kayaking on some of the blue hole springs around Wakulla etc. and find a lake or something to do some bass fishing and then spend a few days on the beach.

Like I said it isn't a tourist friendly area though you'd have to find a place to rent kayaks and fishing equipment etc etc. It would require some driving and figuring out where to go on your own. For some people the heat and humidity is just a problem though. For the money and ease there are better trips out west.
