We were not inconvenienced in the least, having the facilities to do everything from make hot drinks, light to read and work, even power to recharge phones.

You've also got to have a means of turning it on quickly, so as you lose solar power you can replace it with batteries / hydro power.

You need to also cater for a "black start" outage.

Solar makes sense for off-grid locations and in suburban areas on rooftops for providing electricity to the household and exporting any excess to the grid (at a fairly low feed in tarriff), ideally that is used to serve the local community demand first and only the excess is exported to the national grid.

That way you get decentralised stability, but any excess can be used nationally, but you've also got to have the switching / balancing capability to deal with excess demand / excess supply before it causes problems.

We've seen too often that localised problems can lead to network contagion. It's why you need to keep regional supply networks (even within country), physically separated to prevent demand/supply problems escalating before they can be fixed.
