Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is gentrification: the city. Back in the end of the 19th century, brazilians randomly came back from Paris and decided that they too wanted a pretty city with expansive boulevards and beauty. So we expelled people who lived close to the city center (back then, near the ports. Rio was a port city), built some boulevards, and the poor people rose favelas.

More than one century after, the logical conclusion of this decision was that we have an uninhabited city center that turns into a ghost town after the wagie hours have ended. The population growth is all concentrated in the favelas, the rich people (mostly public officials) are a dying breed of retired people who live outside the favela, and now the city has very little prospect of growing because the people from the favela do not move to the city and vice-versa. In the end, we'll see Rio turned into a ghost town or something akin to a medieval feud once the children of the retired public officials inherit the land from their deseased parentage.

São Paulo

São Paulo was mostly alright for the better part of its history, but the obsession with cars and industry really ruined the city. The saving grace of São Paulo is its metro system, which albeit good for brazilian standards, is nothing special compared to the average Tier 3 chinese city. São Paulo still suffers from gridlock.

By the mid XVIII century Brazil had roughly the same Europeans than all of Hispanic America. And more than the United States, which only surpassed them in the early XIX century.

In the 1950s or even 1960s, a third of all people in their second largest city, Rio de Janeiro, were Portuguese born.
In the same time, most people in their largest city, São Paulo, were European born, mostly Italy and Portugal.

And these were two of the largest cities in all of the Americas.
Brazil had also a hugely empty interior (it still has) which were pretty much being populated by successive waves from the heavily European litoral from the XVIII century on.
