Everything here went dark from 11:30AM until 11:30PM.

I'm a small prepper and work from home so I was safe, had supplies ready for around 1 week and had my radio on the whole time from when everything went down to when it came back up.

The amount of misinformation and conflicting information that was being transmitted on the radio was alarming. At first it was just Portugal, then Portugal and Spain, then all of Europe, then it was just some parts, then it was everywhere again.
We were told power was being brought back to some areas, but curiously enough I work internationally and some of my Spanish and French colleagues said that they were lying and the power wasn't back like they said. This went on for hours.

The first estimates for when the power would return was 1 week. Then it turned to 3 days and in a matter of 30 minutes, our PM said it'd come back in 6-12 hours???
I heard people on the radio say it was a cyber attack, then it wasn't, then it was a solar flare, then it wasn't...

The sources of info were always vague and honestly it's almost like the ones in power weren't sure how to play with this situation and just wanted to test the waters.

We still aren't sure what happened, but a power grid doesn't just magically go down.

i live in the sticks, power going off is a regular occurrence to the point we have batteries, inverters, generators etc. my parents have drawers full of candles. When the power goes out here we just stick everything in the chest freezer because it stays ice cold for 20+ hours but usually the power is only out for minutes not hours

Have supplies stocked too is also a brainlet strategy. When I bought my property a requirement was a freshwater source or 0.25 miles maximum from a stream on my property to the source. Then land where I can setup irrigation from the spring to water plants I grow, hills don't matter since you can make water go uphill without electricity. Having the means to eat and drink are far more important when shtf than a stock of supplies. And most people who have a stock of supplies brag about it in America at least. I have a physical map where I find their addresses and mark them down. Medicine, metal canned goods, mason jar preppers, ammo, etc. So if I really need supplies then I know where to scout out to see if they are still there. Anything in a 15 mile radius I keep mentally noted and have penciled out the best ways on foot to get to, angles to approach covered by woods, etc.
At the end of the day you only have yourself and your immediate family to care about. I don't care if you seemed nice in the office, when shtf I know you are a supply cache.

In 12 hours people won't be fully hostile yet so if you really need an update you could ask and let others waste their time and resources listening to radio. If shtf does happen then any communication past a few weeks won't be useful and will just be the "government here to help" which means they want to reclaim control by controlling the flow of resources to make you dependent on them. Kind of like how things are now when shtf and normies are already fighting over supplies since everyone relies on turning the faucet on for water. Should have been a wake up call for people but most will have forgotten this happened in a few weeks.

Generators trip offline or break off their part of the grid (called islanding) if the grid itself goes above or below certain parameters. If a critical number of stations go offline they would chain react and trip everything else offline, called a grid cascade.
Odessa in 2016 is the biggest one I can think off and it was less than 2GW of power loss. We just had 15GW drop in 5 seconds.
If it was that much and that fast there's no real way to mitigate that. FFR is too slow and UFLS would just throw the whole grid offline anyway, you cant really shed 60% of the grid.

Coal power plants wouldn't have saved you from this. It was not a matter of energy self-sufficiency, at the moment Portugal is running disconnected from the European grid and 100% self-sufficient. What happened was from the Spanish node a huge power surge came through that hit the Portuguese grid, and just like a circuit breaker would trip, the Portuguese grid blacked out because otherwise a lot of shit would've broken with an insane surge innit.
