Our economic system is being entirely propped up by migration. There is no real economic growth i.e. growth driven by increases in productive output generated by increases in technology or economies of scale.
Instead the economy is only growing because the pie is getting bigger and the pie is getting bigger only due to migration mainly from India.
The powerblocks in these right of centre parties want the economy to keep growing because that is how they make money. They don't really care about their salaries, if they even recieve one at all. They care about their millions of dollars in stock and property and other assets continuing to increase. That is how they sustain their lifestyle and grow their power.

Trump may or may not have genuine populist sentiment. But the right leaning factions in all these countries do not have a single shred of genuine populist sentiment. Trump's success has just taught them that they need to play to populism if they want to win votes.
Too bad for them that Trump scared all the boomers in these countries with his global trade war and now pretending to be MAGA but for Australia/Canada is an electoral death sentence and it's too late to walk that position back.

Conservative is not a term used very much in American politics compared to the UK and Canada who both have one of their two major parties called the Conservatives.
In America you really only hear 'conservative' used in a judicial context. You might hear neocons talked about still but their dominance peaked in the Bush era and now they are all pretending to be MAGA populists.

I can explain it from a point of view that's entirely Australian political landscape.

~15 years ago our Centre-left political party got into power for the first time in 12 years and went on a massive spending spree that blew through the carefully built up surplus and sent this country into mass amounts of national debt inside 18 months. Ever since, it's been a political hot potato trying to manage and avoid the fallout and mitigate the damage. The left tried to put all these taxes upon businesses which saw them ultimately kicked out of power and replaced by the centre-right.
First they tried doing it by selling off critical infrastructure to the Chinese and importing mass amounts through student visas. Turns out trusting communists is a fucking stupid idea and as such they've pivoted to India.

No-one wants to see the country go backwards under their watch, so the only way forward in their eyes is to flood the country and prop up the economy through immigration; which when continued long enough sends the country backwards anyway as infrastructure can no longer keep up at the rate of increasing demand.

It also doesn't help that the centre-right party when the get elected only holds a slim majority, so they can never actually implement the actual fix required; which is Thatcher style austerity.

It's a grift to make money. The primary aspects of modern conservatism is to protect the wealthy to get kickbacks, that's it. Why else do they spend so much time (successfully) convincing conservative voters that bretahing smog is good, drinking pollution is good, drinking human shit is good, eating unsafe food is good, giving tax breaks to billionaires is good, siding with corporations over people is good, not questioning authority is good, being skeptical of everything the conservative establishment says is bad.

Modern conservatism doesn't care about any of the things most conservative voters think they do. They just want to make money. Cheap labour and having a population of easily exploited immigrants is good for, wait for it, making money!

Look at all conservative policies and think about it. Do they support private healthcare because it's more accessible to normal people? or because it's profitable to sell a $0.80 IV bags for $100?

Is it better for workers to remove health and safety regulations, or does it save money?

Is it healthy to remove limit son raw sewage discharge in drinking water, or cheaper to discharge raw sewage in drinking water?
