Just some machine-made engraving, created from PC-input text.
The A stands out because it's the only letter in the whole name that has serifs while still being placed between two serif capital letters.
Instead of letting a PC and machine do their shit work, whoever sold that fucking stone should've checked letters' spacing WITHOUT the fucking upper and lower serifs.
The spacing is overall correct in measure when you consider letters as blocks, but the graphic result is bad to the eye, due to the prolonged serifs.
That's what happens when you rush shit, even with all the fucking billions of ca$h the vatican owns.
Pretty sure they'll replace the stone soon enough.

When you’re doing an engraving or something though you’re supposed to adjust the letters manually so they look pretty.

You're supposed to do that in indesign too but some lazy faggot GD doesn't know their shit.
Most fonts do this because it's just standard and back . For typing out stuff on a computer for reading it's fine, it's when you have to use bounding boxes and letter wraps, printing...you know designed shit (like a tombstone) so that it looks nice and is easier to read. It would have looked infinitely worse if it weren't just one name and leading/tracking came in to buck break the designer more.

Tbh it fits perfectly. An engraving that isn't right, for a pope that wasn't right. Both appear normal on the first look, but when you look closer, you can see it's fucked up.
