Being a first world country, there are things called computers which can display digital images using a monitor. These imaging scans can be viewed on various devices in the hospital when doctors and nurses access your digital medical records. 5 years ago these scans were available to the patient from a computer at home when they access their online medical records. Current year these scans are unavailable to the patient unless there is a court order. The only time you are able to view these scans is if you are able to get a glimpse of the imaging during the imaging process or if the scans are deemed unimportant enough to show the patient. If you pressure them to show you the imaging they will either show you an image of someone else or decline. You can learn how to interpret imaging in an hour. There is a facade that nurses and doctors jobs are difficult to do.

The only other thing I know of which causes these brain zaps is abuse of MDMA. Since MDMA is a serotonin agonist, which basically signals your brain to pump out as much serotonin as possible, after the drug wears off your brain will be depleted of serotonin. I have abused MDMA fairly extensively and never had any such thing as 'brain zaps'. I have felt pretty flat and shitty, almost to the point of not being able to function for about 2-3 days at times after binging hard, and still never got any brain zaps, so you obviously need to be at the absolute extreme end of abuse to get this. So this would suggest coming off SSRIs is the same as coming off extreme and prolonged MDMA abuse, but it's actually worse than that. Your brain itself isn't being restructured by MDMA (severe abuse can have effects but it's not worth going into). The effect is caused by being depleted of serotonin reserves, which can be easily reversed with normal diet and lifestyle for a couple of days. This is not the case with the zaps caused by SSRI withdrawal, because your body needs to rebuild it's serotonin system, not just make more serotonin to get you back to baseline.

Anyway the short of this long story is that long term SSRI withdrawal is comparable to that of severe and prolonged MDMA abuse, but the effects last much longer.

SSRIs could potentially be useful short-term to get people out of a sort of mental slump or a tough period. But they are a very bad and dangerous long-term solution. After arriving at this point, the industry has basically applied reverse reasoning - SSRIs seem to work to treat depression (temporarily, the trials don't stay with them long enough to see the long-term downsides), therefore this proves that serotonin deficiency was the cause of depression. It would be no different to giving someone cocaine every day for 2 weeks and saying 'see, he feels great, depression is caused by not enough cocaine'. It will always beat a placebo because it does indeed affect mood, but this is only temporary and does nothing to prove that this was the cause of the depressive symptoms.
