Distance between major population centers, especially outside of the North east. There is a hell of a lot of open territory here. No one wants to be on a public train with blacks, especially over long time periods. No one wants to tie their schedule to a train.

Europeans have dozens of countries all piled on top of one another. They need to know where this or that country is, because they're only an hour's dive away and they have a history of being invaded by one another.

The US has Canada to the north, and Mexico to the south. Canada is not very different from us, and while Mexico is full of criminal cartel types, it's not like they're a Russian horde that could invade and destroy us at any moment. The lower 48 states take up the better part of a continent. LA to New York is about the same distance as Lisbon to Moscow. It's fucking huge. We have every type of environment except jungle. A person could spend several life times just exploring all the national parks. Knowing where Luxemburg is simply isn't a pressing matter for the average American, and it's not really a put down to say he can't find it on a map.
