-This war has grossly alienated him from the global market. Russia is quite literally the most sanctioned country on the planet right now and his was always a market that depended on oil exports.
-This war has cost Russia a tremendous amount of human capital in the form of young men of working age who could be doing literally anything besides getting blown up by drones and western military surplus.
-Likewise, this war has also claimed a tremendous cost in materials: vehicles, ammunition, explosives, drones, all these things cost money, money that could be spent on roads or garbage collection or hiv medicine or literally anything besides blowing up Ukrainians.
-Even if Russia "wins": Russia's global reputation has been ruined (for at least a decade lets say), their demographics are going to be completely fucked, and any hypothetical land they manage to seize will require a substantial sum of investment to turn back into something useful or profitable.

Granted, there is no accounting for personal flaws in character or judgement.
