the Germans who are voting AfD are those who can tell that the current system no longer benefits them in any way but actually makes their life progressively worse.
it's why it's mostly backbenchers with no influence who call for the ban, because those with a bit more political experience know that this would be an incredibly risky move. a lot of AfD voters see this as the last resort to try and finally correct course, and there is no way of telling what will happen if the system tells them there will never be a legal way to correct course, period.

You can look at the demographics and each party has a base where they are strong.
CDU+SPD have boomers and already score historically terrible results. Outside of 70+ year olds, no one really votes them.
AFD is strongest with 35-50 year olds. If you took 100 40 year old men who have a family, more than 60 of them support AFD.
Grüne and Linke are popular with foreigners and women who go to university in large cities.

The big issue is foreigners. Demographically, the AFD would simply win because of all the boomers dying in the coming election cycles. Foreigners however vote Linke and similar parties. When they make up enough of the population, you couldn't get a proper majority in the parliament anymore.

With ethnic germans they are arguably around 35-40%. Same as in Sweden where the "nationalist" party is actually around 50%+ among white swedish men but <5% among women and immigrants.
