I don't like Von Der Leyen at all

She managed to create a very visible media profile for her, which is not easy. Usually EU commission heads are seen as just some high-level bureaucrats. But she managed to transcend that and create this illusion she's the global face of the EU. And that might be because she has some above average looks.

Compare that to Juncker who everyone loved to call a drunkard EU bureaucrat. The guy was never liked. But you know what, he went to Washington, met Trump and got him to agree to a deal: Europe buys more gas, you drop the tariffs. By comparison, Trump doesn't even want to meet von der Leyen.

So somehow Juncker was more practically effective than her, but his image was terrible. Nobody saw him as the global face of the EU. Even less those barely visible presidents of the council. The EU always had this problem with being able to present one single leader that others could call if they wanted to discuss something with the EU.

Von Leyen did manage to become that figure that gives the illusion she's the boss of EU, but in some ways she wasn't able to be as respected even as Juncker. The Chinese also seem to not like her either.
