There were Russian forces deployed to protect/take advantage of the zeroth line of defense, but in keeping with normal military practice, they were fairly light; the thing to do (and this has been the case for a long time) is to keep most of your forces in reserve; whatever forces you deploy are there to retard/delay the enemy advance as much as possible to give you time to get your reserves to whether they're needed and to conduct a counterattack, ideally against the flanks of the enemy. Your defensive zone is many kilometers deep, with many successive obstacle belts, and you trade space for time; it should be noted that undefended obstacles are easily cleared, even by hand, but that defended obstacles - esp. if you do a good job of knocking out breaching equipment - will really slow an attacker's progress.

T-72 is a great tank and system and will easily be working late into this century, but the T-14 is an important step in modernization. Small size is no longer the benefit it once was in the 60s and 70s, and Soviets also understood this. The ideal tank is something taller without the space restrictions of a T-72/80, crewless autoloading gun, and high power to weight (to help carry the weight of EW/APS). Then, the goal is to make that package as lightweight as possible by removing armor. The T-14 gets part of this right, but fails by neglecting to cast aside the burdens of the old generation (i.e. heavy-ass armor) which is why it will likely not replace the T-72. The main threat to tanks will no longer be heavy penetrators or ATGMs, but highly precise lightweight munitions in large numbers (drones, but better and attacking from all sides).

People like to say "tanks are obsolete" which is obviously false, but I think there's validity in saying "traditional frontal armor layout of armored vehicles is obsolete"

That's definitely true. Part of why western tanks are so heavy is the much larger frontal armor surface.
That said, recall back to the part where I stated that armor (at least in the traditional sense) is much less important in the realm of plentiful and precise guided munitions. The only way to effectively fight these is through jamming and dazzling, as well as physically intercepting with projectiles. Right now, turtle tanks do an alright job because they not only act as "spaced" armor, but also conceal the outline of the vehicle, but these will be quickly cast aside, similar to ww1/interwar tanks of the 20th century. Vehicles will need a way to quickly and effectively destroy loitering guided munitions before they ever get close.

Soviet tanks have always had barrel-launched missiles. They're simply too cumbersome and expensive. The purpose of the gun is to throw HE at infantry. If you try to make it do anything else, you'll inevitably detract from its main purpose. For example, on assault, how will the tank defend itself if it is firing on infantry? how will the tank protect friendly infantry if it is busy with the gun pointed at the sky?

Battery-electric drones are simply more reliable and become more cost-effective as time goes on. Jets are only really decent choices with greater weight, like gerans. Even if tanks are getting hit with gerans, you can probably still hit them with precise autocannon fire or something; more mass means more inertia and more predictable movement.
