The problem with phrasing it this way is that it can be confused for apathy, or willful self-ignorance. This is, unfortunately, a common misunderstanding of what stoicism actually is.

Perhaps a better way of putting it is that you should not allow yourself to be burdened by (and not waste physical/mental/emotional energy on) things that are outside of your control, and instead focus that energy towards aspects of life that *are* within your control. You should remain cognizant of the world around you (and all of its troubles), but rather than endlessly ruminating on all those troubles that are outside your control (which will result in nothing more than never-ending frustration), use your mastery over your own self and your capabilities as a rational being to navigate these troubles as effectively as possible.

Point taken, although personally I see 'apathy', 'not caring', and 'not focusing one's energy' as essentially meaning the same thing.
