This entire system has failed everyone. It used to be that you could support a family off of one income, and now it is required to have two household incomes to raise a child in comfort.

She has a really rosy outlook, honestly. The grass is always greener. Back in the 50s, men drank a lot more, were home a lot less, and were just as unreliable as we are now, if not moreso. The problem with the old model is that if you get too old and your husband skips out on you, dies, starts cheating, you are FUCKED. You have three kids to take care of, no social safety net, no job experience, and fewer ways to get any support from your ex if he just decides not to pay alimony. It's not like it is today, where everything's networked; for a long time, finding someone in the country if they literally just pick up and move away was a pretty big undertaking.

Feminism was born of generations of women who saw this reality or lived it directly. It's not actually born of some kind of feminine pride or anything ideological -- it's a fundamentally pragmatic way to deal with a population of men who have an incredibly high chance of reneging on their side of the bargain and few ways to compel then to uphold it.
