Jew here. I'm the TPM (Technical Project Manager) for a medium sized company that brings in around 20 mil annually. We have a few #girlcoders and even though they've been with the company for over 3 years they're incapable of solving problems of medium - hard difficulty. They're always asking for help on a ticket (10 minutes into looking into it) and for the longest time a lot of the guys would jump in and help but now most of the guys just flat out ignore them. One of our seniors (man) looks at the ticket and will ask them what they tried and then gives them a hint of where to look but won't help them past that. I have to step in to force a guy to take a ticket by asking them directly. I feel embrassed asking them because I feel like I annoy the guys when I do this and a lot of them secretly hate me but if I don't the work won't get done.

I want to recommend letting some of them go, but I don't want it to reflect poorly on me since they've been there for so long and they're our only women in tech.

I've only worked with one female programmer and she was in the top five programmers I knew in my entire career. But she was a true nerd, a social outcast who was into computers before people started doing it for money and women started doing it to prove something.

the fuck? i was in a very similar situation. Had to create a web app for a final and it was a group of 4: 3 dudes, 1 girl. She always opted for the easy work like writing the report, making shitty html/css and avoiding the backend stuff. When we assigned her something 'moderately difficult' she blatantly used AI and the result was fucked. She dm'ed all of us individually asking for help. In our scrum meeting she tried to defer it to my friend cuz she 'was busy and had finals coming up.' No matter what, she just couldn't get it right and we had to complete her chicken-shit code. her task was making a visual pie chart that displays money spent / money total or something. Checked her linkedin later and she's a self-proclaimed frontend web dev and in a women for CS club Lol.

I can't let them go directly, I can only recommend it but they are well liked because they're always cheerful even as they cause more work for the rest of the team.

I've done the math on the degradation to the team when being asked to look into something else. Assuming a mid level takes a look. If he's already working on something that is about 15m to get "caught up" with the other ticket. 30m - 1hr investigating, then communicating with the person who asked another 15m - 30m. THEN another 15m to get back into the flow of whatever he was alredy working on prior to being interrupted.

My company makes diversity hires "team leader", but their job is basically to brief the actual programmers and review their code, not actually do any coding themselves. I had a conversation with one along the lines of "wow, after my promotion I only have to give them instructions not figure out the fiddly details myself", she is being paid less than her "subordinates" and doesn't know it.

I am responsible for projects getting delivered on time. Team is losing morale and becoming less productive.

Also how did you determine what % of their time that senior workers are helping other people with their tickets? It shouldn't take an hour for them to "investigate" someone else's roadblock if they explained the issue properly. Do they have to learn a new programming language each time?

Are the employees complaining? Do you get a bonus for employing fewer people? Still not sure what the benefit is to firing people whom you said can perform "easy" tickets. But you said you don't have an engineering background, just a business management degree, so how do you determine which tickets are easy or hard?

You're measuring productivity entirely using Trello, which as a programmer I can tell you is a complete bullshit metric in which no one is self-reporting accurately, and constanly inflates their time to completion in order to get less assignments. Managers like you have no idea if a big fix takes 30 minutes or two weeks.

Individual tickets are not a "team effort", that's why they were hired as individual contributors.

I've been with the company almost 5 years and can recognize how difficult tickets are based on past similar tickets, metrics of the ticket management software, and also based on developer feedback. The products are complex and even though some issues are "standard" there are different data layers / API, database, code, that need to be looked at to get an idea of what the problem is sometimes.

Anon, it's no wonder. Programming is hard and requires quite a high IQ. Because the normal distribution for IQ is different for males and females, basically, the male one having longer ends, this means that at the right end the ratio of male to female can go quite high. Some say up to 25 times, so at a certain threshold of IQ, say, 145, you naturally find 25 males to only 1 female.

Also, keep in mind, that IQ tests are "normalized" such as to arrive at the conclusion that human males and females have roughly the same IQ. It's a lie. This is because females on average are smoother talkers, they score a bit higher, on average, on verbal tests, which are borderline useless for programming.

For programming you need to hire those who score high on shape rotation or pattern recognition type of tasks.

As for your situation -- document their fuckups, quantify the number of help requests everyone makes, when you have 6 months worth of data, share it with the management to prove with numbers that they are dead weight. Do not suggest they are fired, let the numbers tell the story.

For the success of your plan I officially authorize you to seek help of capable seniors on how to work with the data, i.e. the number of help requests the femoids make, etc. There have to be more metrics on how to assess their performance and show it's very bad.

Also, it should apply equally to everyone, one should be fired because of the poor performance, not because they are a woman, a man, or a tranny.

That is a good idea of getting the seniors to get me some data. Sounds like a DEI problem. But for the record... before DEI there were some really good women coders and you would be lucky to have them on your team. Some of the best engineers, mathematicians and coders are women sometimes. Its just really rare. If I ever saw two women coders on the same team I would raise an eyebrow. its that rare. Wow, you don't say anon? Have good documentation and properly updating tickets would probably go a long way to fix this. When they ask a stupid question, ask them if they have checked old tickets and documentation for similar problems and let them dig. Assuming that they cannot find their answer, and assuming that you have good documentation and good ticketing practices, you should be able to pull up and example that would have helped them solve the issue that they were struggling. On your end, make notes of when they do this, and give them bad reviews then force them out the door because they will never learn to fish for themselves, because they're women and men do all that stuff for them.
