I've worked in factories/warehouses most of my life and the #1 reason is pay, #2 is safety.
Factory pay is mostly dogshit, even for highly skilled roles. They know Joe Everyman isn't going to uproot his family and move so they pay $13/hour for jobs that should be paying $35/hour. I'm talking skilled maintenance positions that are literally irreplaceable for the company. Now that same Joe Everyman can drive a delivery truck or work in an Amazon warehouse for $18-20/hour. Why in the FUCK would they take the $13/hour job that is even shittier???

The other concern is safety. Basically no factories have employee protections for lung hazards because they're run by boomers with 3rd grade educations. There is no concept of repetitive use injuries because the majority of these jobs are done by illegals, and when they get worn out you just get rid of them and hire more illegals. A smaller issue is that factories are also full of undesirables who put other employees and risk and there is no way to curb this risk.
I make more money working in a grocery store warehouse as a forklift driver than I did as a maintenance manager at food production plants. Manufacturing needs to basically double the wages of all floor personnel if they want people to take these shit jobs. The entire industry needs to grow up.

When I worked at the bug spray factory, they had a rash of workers huffing roach spray to get high. Forklift drivers going around mast up and breaking driving through a wall kool-aid man style. As for cheating your pay - what they will usually do is tell the maintenance techs that they have a "really cool project" for them to do. It ends up being a $40k project to rebrain an entire production line, program a new PLC, and etc...

All of their clients ran machine shops at the 1 to 2 hour drive distance from the nearest major metro area. That cut down on lots of costs in terms of workers and misc taxes, in addition to the satellite county of the major metro where the dogshit dirt floor machine shop if being ran to make big bucks off the backs of dumb fucks.

Machine shops, at least, are usually satellite companies to a metro area. A widget factory usually is in the city to hire all the dindus. Generally speaking, more specialized manufacturing, like CNC, is located either in established old industrial districts, or outskirts. Most, if not all, the machine shops I worked at were either a shop on the city outskirts or was working on finding a location to do so.

The youngest maintenance tech decided that the best way to solve an ambiguous safety interlock fault on a bobst cardboard box machine (20 ft wide, 200 feet long, 14 feet tall, about 200 amps of power) by jumpering out the entire safety interlock system to startup and run the machine.
It's ok, we just won't get in there when it is running. Last job I ever worked- it only took one experience in a factory with mexicans to never do that work again. Almost got crushed and cut into ribbons. Dindus just aren't smart enough to trickfuck machines to defeat the safety protections and override it to running. Mexicans though.... whooooo boy.

In my area last year I saw the local electric company advertising for ENTRY LEVEL, HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA ONLY jobs, starting over $100k. The average income in this area is around $45k. Software engineers in this area average around $75k. It's insane.
I've worked with people who I'm not even sure had a high school diploma making $75k a year with overtime. Yeah it was a shit job and there was only one job like that in the plant so not everyone could get it, but it's insane that degree-requiring jobs pay so little.

But a factory doesn't need 3 or 17 or 42 workers, often it needs 400 or 1200. And if those people aren't there ready to apply, they have to shutter the place. Even the ones that can stay open, they're trying to avoid a certain class of worker. And no, it's not niggers (some niggers can, at least, work)... it's the worst kind of trash who show up for the first day or two and then disappear. But they'll call up and nag people on the phone about their paycheck for that one day for the next 6 months. While all employers occasionally have such an applicant, factories can't afford to have very many of those kinds at once, or assembly lines stall. Politicians can claim that they "created jobs". Corporations can claim that there's a "labor shortage" (and their hiring criteria often magically change once they get their cheap labor too).
To get the qualifications they demand, corporations must raise wages. Or they must stop being so picky. Hire the people that exist and that's that. Train them, educate them, do whatever you must. It's what you have to work with. Deal with it. Stop trying to find a myriad of ways not to hire the citizens of your own nation.

I heard that the TSMC plant in Arizona had a lot of problems with lazy US workers not shaping up. Granted, Taiwanese work practices like expecting people to pull in 12 hour shifts 6 days a week is damned near impossible.
My great-great-grandfather worked his ass off at factories in Coventry during WW2. He worked 80-90 hours and only took Sundays off to rest and recuperate. He went to Church, then would spend time outside since he wanted to breathe fresh air and not be cooped up in a building. He did this for 4 years until he saved enough to bring over his wife and kids to Canada (my great-grandfather decided to move to the States later on).
I deal with supervising people. There's so many fucking problems dealing with non-whites it can make your head spin. Communication issues, not doing any work, and of course HR will always protect them. Shit like this is why I give up.
You're talking pipe dreams. Workplace corruption is common. Abusive managers are either too valuable for senior leadership to let go because they're ass-kissers or in your case, he's gay so he's practically untouchable unless he does something really illegal.
Mass manufacturing jobs that aren't in niche technological areas high up on the value chain cannot come back to the west, full stop.
It was only possible for China to take the lead because of:
1. Massive population, glorified indentured slaves working for virtually no pay for several generations since the 1950s, while the other conditions necessary are set up. This means even if the US fulfilled all of China's other criteria to reinherit this position, which it doesn't, it will take 70 to 80 years minimum, but ultimately lack a large workforce willing to work as slaves for several generations to provide the necessary manpower. Only India has this manpower capacity, and the majority aren't going to be building the west because they'll be back home. And those that do make it to the west won't be content to work as factory slaves or Tim Hortons cashiers forever, and will be rapidly trying to climb (and are) the chain for more lucrative gainful employment.
2. Socialistic policies that took care of the people during those years of massively suppressed wages (and are still enjoyed by the people to this day). Incredibly cheap subsidized food, incredibly cheap subsidized healthcare (virtually free), massive social works for incredibly cheap mass transit, and incredibly cheap attractions (public museums, parks, libraries, third spaces etc).
Manufacturing jobs can only come back to the west if the west follows China's model, which is SLOWLY decouple itself from global markets, slowly rebuild manufacturing capacity and infrastructure over the course a century. This will mean several lost generations of people contributing to the project. This is virtually impossible because you'd have to slowly discourage/ban the domestic operation of all multinational corporations and consumption of all multinational corporation products. But MNCs and citizens can simply leave the US and enjoy a better quality of life, unlike China where emigration is restricted, so you'd need to impose
I applied to a few of the water chemistry jobs in the semiconductor industry. Fully qualified, experienced, time on a submarine, 15 years experience, etc...
The water purity controls in semiconductor manufacturing, in addition to the yet-to-come environmental regs forcing abatement or filtration of the output, is INSANE. I expected top pay for top quality technical work. That shit is more stringent then nuclear.
$18 per hour. Average house cost in a 1 hour drive radius = $200k.

I do maintenance engineering and it disgusts me how many punk kids I deal from college who expect me to fix everything as if I can snap my fingers and do it. Meanwhile they're in their offices having cake and coffee.

You also need the cooperation of the global banking system to lend you money for the project, but convincing them it's a lucrative investment when the best outcome is just competing markets with China is nearly impossible, so force and coercion will probably be needed on that front as well. Even building the factories and infrastructure necessary to bring mass manufacturing back will be nearly impossible to budget and get manpower for without leaning on IMF and China.
Of course that's why the US is trying to start wars all over the world. If they can start another massive global war either in the middle east, continental europe or the asian pacific, a lot of these problems go away.

I priced out a composites manufacturing shop. It is more or less the same skillset as tailoring, sewing, seamstress, and painting. Thats it. The CNC machine cuts all the panels from fabric, then they go to layup, then curing, etc...
In the UAE, they have illiterate people doing the work. Could be anything - UAV airframes, racing hoods for cars, engine intake ducting for a run of cars as a third party manufacturer - WHATEVER.
Factoring in employee turnover, insurance costs, employee pay, emergency contingencies, training, fuckups, nonpayment by clients, etc...
I ended up showing that with an existing 200 sqft building and 10 workers would need at least $10 million to start, and wouldn't turn a profit no matter what the first 4 years. If you can turn a profit at year 5, and continue to do so up to year 10, you break even.
Same with CNC machines - buy a bunch of used HAAS vertical machining centers and start making parts. Unless you have 8 figures startup capital/loan, you aren't going anywhere.

I worked factory maintenance for a while. Rebrained a couple of the old SLC PLCs for maintenance pay, doing engineering work like a dumbass.
What I found was that from a technical perspective, nearly 90% of the men in the industrial maintenance game are shadetree mechanic quality. I had a 20 year mechanic try to convince me that argon was flammable and thats how TIG welding worked. He believed fully that the electricity sets the argon on fire. He said that argon can't be set on fire by a lighter, but you still have to be careful because a spark would set it off, only electricity could catch argon and co2 premix on fire, and thats how the welder works.
They'll nigger rig anything. Same boss had to "design" a mixer stand for a 10 foot wide, 20 foot tall poly tank used for mixing up animal repellant. This dumbass used a fucking airplane propeller sized agitator (4 feet wide paddle mixer) instead of a normal 12 inch flared pump. Mounted it on a 10 foot long, 1 inch diameter mild steel shaft, then on a afroengineered structure made of 2" angle iron. It immediately spazzed out when myself and the other electrician powered on the 1.5 horsepower motor. That fucking motor got to 400 F on my laser thermometer.
He said we should just put a fan on it. After a week of the company running this thing, the driveshaft bent so much that the entire tank was bucking, while full of liquid. He also refused to leak test piping joints in the flammable gas rooms when he worked on the equipment in there, saying he could "see" the gases if they were leaking.

They often do. A small factory for say, 50-100 workers can easily go up in a couple weeks. A big one as I've said, a summer is enough. They built a Freightliner factory not far from where I used to live in 2 months flat and started pumping out big trucks.

I watched one factory go from 75% white to 10% white, when I left I was the only white person on my shift of ~35 people. The culture went from one of very high standards, change your gloves if you touch anything that isn't a food contact surface to watching a Somalian tie his dirty ass shoes with his "clean" gloves on and go right back to food handling. I said "hey man you need to change your gloves" and he said "just for that?"
The somalians would take a water bottle into the toilet to splash water on their asshole and wipe with their hands.
One time a somalian male watched these two women get drowned in work massively falling behind while he's chilling. I say "hey you should help them catch up" and he says "God made me a man, I don't have to help no bitch." I chuckled and walked away, thinking something in between "based" and "what a lazy nigger"
The worst thing about every factory I've worked at besides browns is that they are SO scared to fire ANYONE. No matter how lazy, how slow, how much of a fuckup. If they show up everyday they will have a job guaranteed for 20+ years. It's embarrassing for one, but once it gets around that you literally can't get fired the whole culture collapses. Management is shocked everytime, as if removing the incentive to work hard wouldn't result in a bunch of lazy fucks.
My department has I'd say only 70 employees, but even so I can think of 15 who should have been let go years earlier.
We had a woman, one of the laziest dont give a fuck employees we have. She was on a light duty restriction (no lifting over 30 pounds, by a doctor), lifted stuff over that limit anyway, hurt herself doing it, did not report it to work, called in sick and went to the doctor (who reported it) and they STILL kept her. It seriously boggles my mind.

I did. For 20 years. I applied in every plant in my state. You know why I didn't get hired? Nepotism. Masons run those places and they won't hire non mason blood. My grandmother's cousin was the foreman of the plant right down the street from my house. I used her name as a reference. Never got hired. She asked him why. His answer? "I don't hire people that far down the branch"

people like to pretend that "manufacturing" is simple, teachable work like tightening bolts on an assembly line. but that hasn't been true for decades. modern factory work, even in small shops, is mainly operating and maintaining machines.
in theory, maintaining machines is easy. i started out in a print shop, where my job was swapping out parts and refilling ink on large digital printers, folding machines, presses, saddle stichers (think giant stapler) and other simple equipment. as a businesses, this shop had a lot of advantages:
simple, easy-to-maintain machines
with commodity parts that are easy to replace
low cost of mistakes; you lose a few minutes and a few sheets of paper
i didn't find operating machines hard, so i assumed it was easy. turns out, i was the only employee who could manage most repairs. the average american (maybe even the average person globally, who knows?) is too dumb to reassemble a little plastic gearbox. they TEACH CLASSES on how to operate certain kinds of printers at art schools.
eventually, i got better-paying white collar job, and the shop started struggling. my former boss even called and offered a 50% pay bump. but i didn't want to be fixing machines my whole life, so i turned him down. the shop started falling behind on orders, and closed during the covid pandemic despite a global uptick in print media sales.
now, imagine the same problem but with higher stakes. injection molds and CNC machines can cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace, and they're much more sensitive to mistakes. to get a half-decent operator, you have to source talent from at least a community college, if not a university. and even the kids with degrees have a 50/50 chance of breaking your equipment. you already have thin margins because you're running a commodity business. do you really want to hire anyone with less than 2 years' experience and a decent referral? i wouldn't.

Same job at a dentist's tools equipment company. FDA specs. Handpieces, polishers, magic toothpaste...
They were using clothes washing machines as a final product sanitation process, with FDA approval, to clean off any dust, food grade grease, etc... on the plastic polisher prophy angle tools.
FDA approved. The budget had room for going to home depot down the street and getting replacement washing machines and dryers if they broke, or if someone wanted one.
Night shift. Between skanks slinging ass, plant manager's son in law naked drunk fighting cops on break, and stoners lighting up in the back stairwell, one of the really smart dindus figured out that he could wash his own laundry there. They had dish soap in the clean room where they make dental varnish and set the building on fire occasionally.
Did that for about a month, was what he said when they caught him. The recalls could only reach back about 2 weeks because of shipping and etc... Lost a few 20+ year clients on that one.
Same place had a shift supervisor come up to our morning meeting in the maintenance mezzanine shop

It really was. The slant bed cnc machines had a problem with losing home and crashing out, but not causing an overcurrent fault or following error on the encoders. 5,000 rpm spindle with high speed steel old school tooling on a collet makes a caveman fire real quick.
That same guy got shot about a month later. I didn't know and went around making jokes about how it was in the military that they had use practice getting shot will tiny bullets, then getting used to them, eventually being able to get shot by a rifle and survive no problem.
HR let me know he got shot the night before.
Factory jobs suck, and they pay barely above minimum wage.
Trust me it's a pay issue, the conditions in expected to live under making 30$/hr are ridiculous even with overtime. Still can't save to get a house, every time I turn around it's some financial issue whether health care or car

I work management in manufacturing. Why work here when Amazon pays more for picking and McDonald's and Walmart pay 2 dollars less an hour for much easier work? We only get by with job placement companies having questionable citizenship workers or felons.
