It is done: The Riksdag has passed a new law prohibiting the purchase of sexual acts online, among others the type of business being ran on the much-disputed website OnlyFans.
The new law means that it will become illegal to give compensation to another person for them to carry out a sexual act remotely, for example in a video, for that to be viewed to the buyer.
It will also become illegal to encourage or to economically take advantage of someone in order for them to engage in sexual acts remotely for a compensation on the orders of a client.
This is a new form of purchasing sex and it's about time we modernize the Sex Purchase Act, and that we also include the purchases that are carried out remotely on digital platforms such as OnlyFans, says the Social Democratic member of the Riksdag Teresa Carvalho after that the Riksdag voted to pass the bill.
It will continue to be legal to watch and pay for pre-recorded sexual material.
Creators on OnlyFans have critiqued the law and claim that this will affect their business.
This law isn't about them first and foremost, but it's about the youngsters and children that we need to protect. We know that there is a dark background with drugs, human trafficking and assaults, plus it's a gateway to more severe forms of prostitution says Teresa Carvalho (S).
Could lead to prison. The proposal came from the Justice Committee and enjoyed wide support in the Riksdag. The Social Democrats ordered, when they were in a position of government, an investigation to bring forth the new laws.
The purchase of sexual acts could land a person a maximum sentence of a year in prison while pimping could lead to a maximum sentence of 4 years in prison according to Ottar.
