My dad passed away in 2016 and my cat spent the night in the garage and came back the next day smelling like he'd sat in his lap all night and had his aftershave on. Rather creepy.

Really though, when cats get old, when they can't fight like they used to, you're not doing them any favors leaving them un-fixed - he'll go off to fuck or fight, get the shit kicked out of himself, then spend a couple of days with some godawful wound before coming home to die on your bed. I've seen this, it's what happens to old males - you can say it's nature's way or whatever, but that's kinda bullshit with domesticated animals, and it's simply merciful to step in past a point, provide an alternative.
