These were primarily designed as finishing schools for the American elite who would later go into business, politics, media, etc... Only starting in the late 60's did the Ivies decide that what they ought to be optimizing for is standardized testing scores. This has been very destructive for a few reasons, first and foremost is it in part perpetuated the disintegration of the old WASP ruling elite, and second is it helped engender a new rootless elite with a very thin sense of obligation to, or ownership of the state. Almost my entire department was Chinese. The Chinese professors hired Chinese graduate students and post-docs. They spoke Chinese at all times except during classes or when directly addressing me. Based on the few conferences I attended, the situation did not seem anomalous.

The British student loan/fees is ~9k per year. A class of 100 native students is 900k, per year. You could afford a building, plus 10 lecturers for the 100 no problem with that level of funding.

The reason foreign students had to pay more is because the ivy league is supported almost entirely by private donors. Those donors are past graduates who become successful old money rich, and then give back to their alma mater.

This system worked great when the ivy league was only supporting whites. Once they started letting aliens and foreigners in, they realized that Quong Ding and Pramdeep Sucdik weren't going to be sending money back to the college once they graduated.

So they decided to charge more, to try and wring a little bit of the money they might have gotten if they'd rightfully given the seat to a native white.

In the end though, those foreign tuition hikes are still a massive net loss for them. The ivy league is doomed. Without their donors, they will collapse, and indeed are already collapsing now. The ivy league dies when the boomers die. No Gen Xer or Millennial is going to send money to some basedboy shitbrick institution.

The only way they could possibly survive is if they immediately went full NatSoc, booted all the shitskins, and then began aggressively recruiting native white boys with promises of SIGNIFICANT wealth and free opportunities in exchange for loyalty and pledges to the institution.

They aren't going to do that, though, so they're cooked. A zombie institution, shambling along, unaware that it's heart is already dead.

Schools need revenue to stay open, that’s just how it is. We can debate budget priorities or discuss executing overpaid admins or cutting wasteful athletics programs or a million other things but at the end of the day schools need money for shit, and if you can accept a limited number of international students (and yes, they are limited, I can’t speak to Ivies, but most schools cut it at ~4-5% max) while bringing in an extra 30-35% tuition per head that brings in a lot of usable revenue with a minimal impact to domestic acceptation rates.
