The twin towers were not built like "bunkers", they were pretty flimsy. You can see from that classic photo with the sunlight how hollow they are inside. With only a single skin of columns around the outside, having many of those severed by having a plane smash through them means a significant portion of the supports are now gone. Its really not surprising that massive structural damage followed by a fire would cause such a building to collapse.
