Portland, Oregon used to be a slightly "gritty" blue-collar city. It had bums and a bit of crime, but it was a good place for average white working men to find jobs and buy an affordable home and live a decent life.

Starting around the mid-90's, the city became trendy with Gen-X'ers and proto-hipsters and gradually changed. It was also a LOT cheaper than cities in California had become, which led to an ongoing invasion from the south.

Portland's 'problem' is that white people made it a relatively decent place to live. Portland was designed with lots of parks and relatively short street-blocks so that people would stroll around more easily. Portland never developed a 'decaying inner city' in the 1960's and 70's like many places did across the US. This was appealing to outsiders who wanted to live an urban lifestyle but without some of the drawbacks.

Old-school industries like logging and the dockyards closed up shop; junkies and various hipster degenerates flooded into town from all over the country. Real estate prices exploded. It's no longer a blue-collar paradise, although it remains about 65% white. Woketards have crippled the police force, which is why the city's 6% black population has been slaughtering itself over the past few years.

There is also a conspiracy theory that the feds took note of white nationalist movements in the 80's and 90's and specifically allowed violent leftists to move and organize there without government persecution in order to shut down racially-oriented pro-white movements in the region. My family knew people in the planning commission decades ago, and they were making strict rulings on code and zoning because they were developing communities in a certain way so that they would behave a certain way. It didn't have the pavement ape population that many other cities had back then but there was still plenty of decay, both of the physical infrastructure and of the people. I don't think that is quite so clear cut. There is/was a lot of sprawl and outside of Portland itself. The more salient issue was that Portland sits in one of the most fantastic agricultural valleys in the world. Sprawl was consuming that extremely valuable land. The best thing I can say about Portland without any reservation is that food there is terrific. All of it. There is no argument to this - if you disagree you have never spent any time in portland.

It's bland and boring but mostly uncomplicated. Once you get to the exurbs, then you need to be quiet about being from California or having those values. They don't even like people from Atlanta moving into those areas. Even then, you can find "move-in" enclaves. Blue Ridge and Dahlonega are both leftist in the cities but quickly turn banjo when you get into the county. There are also some oddities like witches covens in the mountains and a nudist colony in Dawsonville.
