I always felt like I was underemployed and never met my true potential. Studied EE, got good grades, had several job offers after graduating but picked the least impressive offer with the least long term potential due to wanting to stay near home and overall just mental illness to be honest.

But it's a state government job, so at least I have an okay life even if I see my college classmates surpass me. It's 10 years on and many of them are like senior engineers at big companies, VPs, etc. I'm an engineer at a government utility and I'll probably stay at this level until I retire.

But compared to what I see younger people going through, part of me feels like I'm still lucky. I'll most likely keep getting a steady paycheck with benefits until I retire in 20 years. I also half expect to not actually get my pension, but still. I managed to sit down in one of the chairs by the time the music stopped.

It all feels so mixed. My ship is sinking, just slower than many others. I wish I had been more ambitious and gotten one of the gravy train jobs when I was younger, now I'm basically stuck in a dead end career. Should I feel happy that I have this shit? I'm 36. I just had to turn down 3 jobs offers and accepted the 4th this morning. Feels kinda bitter sweet because I genuinely would have been happy with all of them. Through some fuckery of the universe they all send me an offer in the same week. Ultimately went with the highest paying one in sales. I've done it before and am quite comfortable in their kind of environment but for a bit it was getting annoying as shit. Nothing for 2 months then all 4 nearly at once.

I will say this. While it is no where near as easy as our boomer parents had it I did personally go in and put my meat vessel into each and every one of those positions place of business to make an introduction. Simply saying hello, dropping the name of the person of contact, inquiring if anyone was available to get a few more details about the position. Get off your high-horse. My company does something similar, and chases talent at career fairs for positions we struggle to fill. The reality is that we're asking too much, and I'm sure you are too. Even though our pay is way above average, so are our hours, and vacation time is minimal compared to competitors. And if it's not that, then blame whatever department does your hiring. They want to stay employed and/or are terrible at their jobs. Any well-paid position for a company that's *actually* hiring is filled extremely quickly.

We have to drive product in, higher a third party to set up the booth (required by venue) hire another 3rd party to pull power cords (venue requirement) rent all tables and most AV shit (go ahead and guess why). Also have to fly people in from all over the country, NDA in swag, NDA or hot shot larger equipment. Everybody needs hotels and food. Just the hotels and food will be close to $40K I'm sure.

A lot of them require you to download an app. Management jobs take a while to get through the process so you wouldn't start for easily month. You would have to come to the US for in person meetings a few times a year but it isn't bad. We also have a warehouse going in up there but that is pleb work. We have WFH jobs as well, I'm sure other OEMs are doing the same thing.

After running that district for a while, I did a "lateral" move that I had to interview and compete against other internal employees. I'm sure the job was posted to the public but zero fuck chance anyone outside of the company would have got it. Highest profile "customer" in the world wasn't going to a nubee.
When I was in operations at the dealer I was the guy that showed up when managers got fired. I had a minimum 3 hour 1 way drive at the last one a ran. I lived in a hotel for a while then bought an RV and stayed at a park making cash on peridium and cooking my own food vs eating out.

They hire EE as well, but usually those guys do 5 years applied field work and then move on to sales or management quickly once they master the product application side. Salesmen with EE are always in demand, even though it feels a waste of a degree, a lot of customers are engineers themselves and prefer to work with other engineers. (I did the sales route eventually).

But anyway this kid they hired, he bitched and moaned about wanting to work from home. Controls is very obviously a boots on the ground career, and this kid just wanted to bind graphics on servers remotely. They can hire someone in India for $8/day if all they want is graphics binding. Recently have tried for corporate jobs and it's night and day. Even did a course for a low-level data-entry tier position and got insta-rejections for all applications sent for job offers in every web platform imagineable.

In canada most controls positions need a degree of some kind, and then they train you on the specifics from there. it can be just a basic 2 year instrumentation tech school degree, I know multi millionaires (with an extra zero after million) who became partners with just a basic course like that.

Some companies even train up electricians into controls tech positions, since they already have a lot of the VFD fundamentals, wiring and work ethic, they then cross train them in controls, project management, fucking bluebeam, and off they go.

Jobs stopped hiring around 2020, and they blanket don't hire white men.

I have been traveling my entire career. Wouldn't want it any other way. Plane travel has become a joke in the past 6+ months. I have yet to be on on flight that left on time for a while. Not a one. I used to fly every week, its become such a pain in the ass I just do it every other week outside of special last minute trips.
I've took my wife on one or two trips, I wish she would go with me more. I get to see the country while she is at home cleaning houses for family and friends. Also India is lagging in automation as they have cheapo labor, so unlike IT or software engineering, there is no job pressure from India in this industry. It is a STEM field that is still almost all white.

It can tie into industrial (oil field, automation, manufacturing), Municipal Waterworks and power generation, mining, and HVAC. All need control techs and engineers.

A lot of the modern stuff is function block (visual logic) programming, but there are certain applications where you can pretty much go hard with raw code to get really good results. Pic related is honeywells PLC block programming which they also use a version of for their commercial HVAC stuff. In reality these blocks are just compiled into code for device, but its an easier interface to follow your logic for non-programmers.

The other half of controllers is IT work, since everything you have lives on ethenet and you are building servers to exist in your customers network environment, or on a segregated network within theirs. Even things like boilers, pumps and chillers have a web server built into them these days. You work a lot with the customer IT department at certain phases of a project to tie everything together.

I once had to build a full server in a quarantine room for a customer with two IT guys watching and filming me, every step from loading the OS, set up the SQL server, load the proprietary control software, setting up all the static IPs etc. And then demolish it and wipe it clean. They their IT team would replicate this on the other side of the wall past the quarantine, step by step and make it live. Very paranoid about malware and shit.
