Ultimately you can not transcend the self by looking inward because you are then by nature focused upon the self. The spark of the divine is in you but it's only a single spark. God exists far beyond us as well. Once you've let go of the things that tie you down you use that freedom. You live in your faith. You do good works. You in your relationship to others and the world you exist in transcend youself by becoming more than yourself connecting, growing, and engaging in gods creation and creating yourself which is the most sincere imitation of the divine. The way i see these faiths is as the most bizarrely selfish sort of selflessness. I think zen thought is a dead end but there can be useful tools found there, though they are not exclusive to it and can be learned elsewhere.

Siddhartha Gautama was taping into something but the method he developed for enlightenment is flawed, especially if you’re trying to live by it today. Achieving Nirvana is akin to what esotericists call initiation. Think about life as though it’s a learning experience. You come down here to learn. It takes many lifetimes to be ready to initiate. Initiation is the final stage of soul refinement before you return to the source, Tao, the All, or in your case the Buddha Nature. It is possible to initiate in the modern world but no one is going to initiate you besides yourself. No monk, worshipful master, guru, etc. They cannot initiate you. The only people that could are probably in the Middle East or Asia. So you have to initiate yourself. You don’t have to give up all your possessions and go live as a monk for 30 years, in fact…that’s counter productive and evasive. You’re supposed to fulfill your purpose, you cannot fulfill your purpose by hiding in the woods. That and it’s the function of created things to conform to their proper nature. Recognizing your nature is part of it; your desires, impulses, etc. The job is not to completely overcome them but to learn to ride them. Ride the desire, don’t let it ride you.
