What exactly is the appeal behind watching someone else play video games?

When I was a kid I used to play TwoBestFriendsPlay in the background when I did homework
I’m assuming most people use it for background noise

for me it's just seeing if there are games i want to play. i'm very frugal with money. i'm not one of those who watch for hours though, or who follow any particular streamer

Stopped basically when my youngest was born and have recently started playing again now that they arent such handfuls and they show a bit of interest. Play the cars racing game and the goat simulator with my oldest while the youngest uses a non connected controller
I could see watching youtube videos to get help or hints or maybe to see if a game is interesting or looks fun to play. But actually sitting down for an evening of watching a streamer play a game is absolute retardation to me. Like just as dumb as findom people or dumbasses paying only fans whores

How would I as a gamer tap into this appeal? What grows and attracts viewership of this sort of content?

Same here. Never been much of a gamer but I like a good narrative regardless of the format. Some games have better writing then most films now, so watching a well edited playthrough is a worthwhile bit of entertainment without having to pay 80 dollars for something I'm not going to be able to take the time to play and beat myself.

It is very comfy to those that wish they could play better but can not due to various reasons. For some, growing up watching their older brother play games was quite relaxing and concentration heavy at the same time. I do not fault people from watching people play games or cook or make furniture or metal detect or pan for gold. I think there is a comfort to it that certain people will never understand. The e-celebrity of these people is usually a reflection of what the simp thinks is the ideal friendship, one that elevates their social standing-- that is something entirely different.

I lost all interest in actually playing games but still enjoy video game content. Also, I want to watch something while doing other things and video game content is ideal. I play a few old once or twice a year and that is about it. The last thing I played was brutal doom and doom 2 along with a few wads

Sometimes you want to follow the story of the game.
Sometimes you like the skill or strategies of a person.
Sometimes the person is just nice or funny to hang around with, as he talks about your hobby.

I sometimes watch Starcraft 2 on YouTube. And it's not much different than watching a football match, except there are more strategies and the narrator is funny.

Have you ever played a Dark Souls game? They fucking suck. Every enemy hits for like a bazillion damage and while it takes 4 seconds for my greatsword to swing the boss has already made 15 attacks and one of them was an AOE that can only be avoided one specific way that I have no way of guessing on the first try. Just punishing relentlessly and making you backtrack and get your souls and if you suck you lose your souls and resources are limited so you can't spam arrows or any other gay shit you just have to get gud or fuck off. So I fucked off. I would rather watch other people play Fromsoft games because then instead of frustrating me the game becomes a catharsis of schadenfraud as I enjoy the suffering of Asmongold while he loses at a Fromsoft game instead of me. I get to enjoy him being frustrated and embarrassing himself in front of a huge crowd of people.

With Minecraft, there is a lot that isn't clear. By watching, You learn how to play and then you get hooked on Mumbo Jumbo and BDouble00.

Sometimes it's the schadenfreude when the chat can interfere with the game. Sometimes it's enjoying the game without having to do the grindy bits yourself. Sometimes the guys are just entertaining to listen to in the background so that the deafening silence of my solitude doesn't start whispering for me to find out what my Glock tastes like.
