They're not as dumb as you'd thing, especially when it comes to money and street smarts. They're no doctors and rocket surgeons but they are in organized crime, and many of their leaders have been in the game for decades. One of the things that actually helps keep prisons under control in the US because of the vast racial differences is allowing some of the game to play out in prison. This puts inmates in positions where acting out rashly is a huge no-no because it impacts "business".

I've been to jail dozens of times. Mostly in california. Never spent more than 24 hours each time. But there were a few thing sI picked up on. Don't talk to anybody. Unless you absolutely have to. I've never been to prison but my cousin did his time in one of the lost violent prisons in the state. He told me it's really not as bad as people think, but when it gets bad, it's bad. He said they would go a month or two without anything really violent happening sometimes and that most people just want to do their time and leave, and when really violent shit happens the whole prison goes on lockdown so people would come out of the hole and then get the shit kicked out of them in their cell (without the COs watching to avoid lockdown) for doing whatever it was that made the prison go on lockdown.
