Walmart has always been profiled as a store that hired people near or past retirement age. They mostly hire them as greeters who make sure people don't leave the store without paying. Nobody at Walmart has a full-time job there.

In all honesty, it's a good thing that Walmart does hire the elderly. Illegal or not, the elderly are discriminated against big time in the US. On the flip-side, Walmart is notorious for forcing their suppliers to move to China, and my observation is that the majority of their employees on the floor never look up from their cell phones to help people. It's kind of hard to judge them either way.

I don't think that Walmart goes by other names. They are just the modern day K-mart. The next higher step would likely be Target in the US. After that, there may be regional favorites, but the whole thing is losing ground to Amazon. Walmart has an online presence, but less choice than Amazon.
