Apparently he's started to get involved in RISC-V-based AI accelerators, but I doubt it's going to be particularly relevant. The future for efficient AI accelerators is going to be with analog chips, not repurposed CPU architectures. Modern AI tech wastes an enormous amount of resources essentially simulating analog computing already.
Right now the algorithms and such are changing so rapidly that ASIC solutions have yet to publicly hit the market. In the long term clockless free-running chips which perform like ASICs and can be more dynamically reconfigured than FPGAs will win. For now the state of the art is unified memory architectures like the new thing Jim is holding.

OK so this is a really simplified abstract explanation
Current gen AI require huge numbers of very simple calculations and access to a large pool of fast memory. You could do those calculations on a normal CPU but CPU's dont have a lot of cores or memory bandwidth in relation to whats optimal for AI. Those CPU cores are also massively over engineered for the calculation required for AI so they use a lot of energy and space (therefore cost) to do something very simple. You could do those simple calcs on a super simple core, you dont need a modern CPU. A modern high end server CPU with 128 cores could do 256 of these calculations per clock cycle but we need trillions of these calculations to do anything useful. Even the biggest server CPU's are very very slow to get enough calculations done
GPUs are a much better match for these kind of workloads. They have a pool of super fast memory compared to a CPU, there just isnt enough of it. So what we did as a short term solution was to retrofit much bigger memories on to high end GPUs to perform these calculations. An Nvidia B200 AI GPU is basically an RTX 5090 die with more memory and different firmware that enables some additional modes of math. One of these GPU based cards has about 25,000 processing cores. They are much simpler, smaller, cheaper, more efficient cores than on the 128 core CPU but still they are enough to do the calculations required for AI. The GPU can do 25,000 calculations per clock cycle vs the CPU's 256. So it can run the AI calcs about 100 times faster than the top end server CPU
Now that sounds amazing and its a huge improvement, especially when you fit 72 of those GPU's into a single system. Problem is that its still massivly over engineered. Those cores were designed for to process graphics problems and there is a lot of silicon (power and cost) that basically sits unused

The next step is to manufacture an ASIC. An application specific integrated circuit. Thats a chip with cores or silicon that is designed to do exactly whats needed by the AI algorithm. Once we get to that point then we should see another 100x increase in performance just as the CPU to GPU performance increased. We might even see a much bigger increase than then depending on the algorithms chosen
The problem is that right now the algorithms are a moving target so deisgning an ASIC that works for all of them isnt efficient. We might as well keep using GPU's till we get to that point. However as we standardise thing we will see a new generation of AI hardware that will be at least 100 times faster than GPUs for the same power and cost

Transformers is certainly showing its weaknesses, which isn't surprising given how state of the art models are 3-4 orders of magnitude larger than the research models described in the original Transformer paper, despite still using the same fundamental tech. It's nothing that, so far, hasn't been able to be worked around by simply throwing hundreds of billions of dollars worth of hardware and energy at the problem, but something's going to have to replace it sooner or later.

Does that slow things too much? It seems to me that sorting would be a fairly basic function. Also it seems like there should be stages or levels within a single chip. Like part of it full of very basic cores cheaply manufactured that filter into a second level of the chip that has abundant and fast memory with fewer but more complex cores. I’m sure there are obvious issues with an approach like this. But to me, what Keller has done seems very obvious and it begs the question of why it took so long to figure something like this out? Intel graphic card drivers were developed in Russia, then due to sanctions they had to sack all of the engineers and move the development elsewhere. Sacking the core team and replacing them people who had no experience is a recipe for disaster. That's one of the reason why the intel's drivers were so unstable. They had no option to keep the team / to relocate them. And building experience takes time.
Open sourcing their drivers is weird, there aren't that many capable engineers to improve / to fix the drivers for free. It's an action of desperation I reckon. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole opensource trick was done do keep the old team working (at least partially) involved in development
Thats no longer true. AMD have done a great job of improving the driver and developer situation over the last 6 months. Its not at the level of the Nvidia / CUDA ecosystem yet but the gap is being closed. They have actually started to take shit seriously
We now have new open source drivers and tooling for the MI300X/350X. PyTorch support is being improved very fast. There is a new AMD cloud for developers where smaller devs that cant afford hardware can get remote access to AMD systems for free. New virt drivers so that monster GPUS can be shared between VM's / clients
We are doing some work porting our tooling stack to AMD at the minute and they have been very helpful with us. They even gave us a dedicated contact for support and gave us an 8 x MI350X system on long term loan for free
Onme of the side benefits of this is that all this new work will be filtering down to the Radeon range, including the virt stuff so desktop GPU virtualization will become possible again on AMD. There is a lot of good stuff in the pipeline coming from AMD

1) They're fucking late. Timing matters a lot in tech. Even though a lot is standardized, proprietary bits always remain and prevent consumers from changing brands down the road.
2) It's not enough. Related to problem number 1 in many ways, but AMD is almost ways laggin in performance. By the time they match Nvidia, Nvidia has something better ready to launch.

Although a huge breakthrough, it's still basically exponentially expensive to train improved models, and we're now at the point where cutting-edge models are costing tens of billions of dollars to train, so it's hard to say how long we'll be able to continue brute-forcing advancement in this way.
(This was why DeepSeek's recent model was such a huge upset, crashing Nvidia stonks, because it only cost ~$5M to train, and could compete favorably with ~$10B+ models.)

There is no access to the software for the FPGA on BlueField 2/3 devices. Its a closed eco system so no compiler or even documentation on the FPGA side. The customer only gets access to the ARM A72 cores for general compute. There are utils in the BSP that allow you to define event driven network security and behavior rules which are offloaded to the FPGA. Those utils are closed source and provide the comms channel to talk to the FPGA software stack but there is no official way to access it directly
You could download the BSP and try and reverse engineer it but its not my area of expertise
