At work or school or out on a date, a man is always, always putting up a front so that he will not be rejected, because the consequences of social rejection have become life-destroying (eg: cancelling, exposure on social media, loss of job, family, friends, threats to physical safety). So men retreat into safe solo activities like the chans, or autistic paradox map games, or hunting and fishing, or working on a project car.
