I have a basic HS diploma and no special skills, but I will most likely get an IRATA certificate in the meantime before I go and try that. Work experience is in construction and logging, so I am not afraid of hard work.

I run drilling mud, water based and oil based mostly, so foam or silicate for this guy. Rigs suck and always did, I did it for 15 years before getting into mud. Your best bet would be get a truck driving license and haul pipe to the rigs or something. You won’t be spinning chain or anything like that, you’ll work on a double that makes 3 connections a shift and no longer drilling with double stands, you’ll spend more time scrubbing a mess that doesn’t exists.

Try in 7 years. All of that is slumping now. Even then, the days of roughnecks buying lambos are long over.

If you want some decent money and better living, I'd say come to BC and work construction. You'll be paid less than the oil fields but you'll only get 1 week of -10C weather, and the rest of the year it's either English rain or Italian sun. I'd say it's a better deal because of the working conditions.

there is also lots of construction work in remote areas as well, and that's for all trades. most of your time is spent in safety meetings, waiting for the safety guy, waiting for this, then break, then some work then lunch.
if you can get on with a union it's really primo work, and if you are not doing remote work you usually only do 4 days a week, no fridays. companies like pcl are union, my cousin works for them doing plumbing. perhaps go to a union hall and start from there?
the thing with alberta is that they have the weakest labour laws in canada, the only province i know where after you are hired you are approached by hr to sign a form saying you don't get overtime pay anymore, you get "banked hours" which are paid out at the regular rate when you want time off. they always "lose track" of these hours, too. ALWAYS. most non union construction will force you into an overtime agreement. you are considered company property in most workplaces, work always comes first, etc. expect all kinds of calls and emails on time off. alberta is very different in this regard, there is little work/life balance. bc is better for that; better pay in some cases, better overtime rates, better safety inspections, but higher cost of living depending on where you go. i guess my point is that it's not a place you want to remain.
and i don't know about plumbing, but a carpenter's ticket from ab is recognized in many countries around the world, like australia, where they REALLY pay you good money in remote work. i met all kinds of aussies that worked in the moines back home six months a year and spend the other 6 travelling the world
