You number 1 for the person you want to win, the rest get preference votes. Kinda like 2nd best, 3rd best option etc. A candidate in a seat has to win 50% of the number 1 votes, if they do, preference votes don't mater. If they don't and multiple candidates are viable the preference votes come into play. The person with the lowest amount of number 1 votes gets knocked out first, and based on their preferences their votes are distributed to the rest, then the next lowest etc. And so on it goes until 1 candidate gets and maintains a majority.
