Unlimited Troika (universal map for access to all public transport in Moscow) costs 3k rubles monthly with average salary of 150k. These studies weren’t just of American ciries.
Many of the studies also included other cities around the Globe that had a reputation for high quality public transit.
“The Local” a European newspaper, with branches in a number of European countries, used to do lists of how you knew you’ve lived in “x” country long enough, and for a number of different countries, one of the answers was always, “you own a car because the excellent public transit has let you down”, with reasons being strikes shutting down the transit, etc.
In the USA, even in cities known to be in the top ten for public transit, a trip can easily take 3-4x as long as just driving.

The main reason american cities are laid out in the way they are was not due to pressure from the auto industry, it was due to pressure from the government and real-estate sector, who both wanted land to be bought and sold in standardized plots.

mixed zoning is fucking stupid. With mixed zoning you get a shop on bottom and maybe one or two apartments on top. This leads to gross urban sprawl which is largely unattractive and wasteful.

All you need to do is stack them high. In business districts, stack businesses on top of each other for about 10 floors or so. Hang signs from the side of the building to indicate what's on each floor. That way you're able to have 40 small businesses on one four corner intersection.

We already know what to do for apartments, so just do that. Now you have multiple districts that aren't mixed use, resulting in a very quiet residential district and a very active marketplace within walking distance.
