If you produce a product without a customer asking you to, then offer that product for sale yourself, you are self employed. If customers employ you to do something or make something, then you work for them.

Selling products though, I usually end up getting absolutely fucking shit on. Sold an adapter for vr headsets for a while and this one lady left a 1 star review because the part that interfaced with the headset that you couldnt see or feel had a texture she didn't like. She believed I needed to sand this part. I was the only person who sold a working product and I sold it for like $8. It would take me probably 35 minutes to sand this part that didnt need sanding.

I still like selling products as they scale pretty well, but there are absolute fucking cretins out there that will give you a one star review. Most people will leave a one star review to be heard and get a solution or a refund. However theres a subset of people that will get their money back and still insist that you should never be allowed to do business. Even though people love your product and beg for it, theres people that want you to fail and will go out of their way to fuck you in any way possible. You can see their review histories too and they do it across hundreds of products for the most mundane stuff.

I have been developing products for the past year or so. Only had one really hit and im launching a new product in hopefully the next few weeks. The one thats selling has absolutely been worth it. Its a little plastic piece that I print out and break the supports on and package up. Basically every month and half I send a little box to amazon that takes me 3 hours of work, and a bunch of passive time on my multiple 3d printers and end up making like $500 profit. It is absolutely worth it, but there is no way of increasing the sales volume. The product is so niche that I cannot grow that product.

Amazon is the largest store in the world and theres always going to be ways to improve products. I got into it on accident, but im focusing on very unique items that can be improved. Basically sub 500+ sales volume. I figured at this level it would be very difficult for the chinese or anyone else to steal my business. The tooling cost, R&D, and projected profit are just too small for them to justify. Do this across like 5 or 6 products and you could probably pull $300k+ per year.

I have sold literal thousands of units of this product and just got my first five star review a month ago. A few weeks later this guy says the units dont fit but he was able to modify them to fit. Literally nothing in my manufacturing process or product has changed, and if I really got to the bottom of it, there was more than likely an issue that has nothing to do with me or hes just straight up lying. Bogus reviews are usually weeded out, but when you go from no reviews, to five stars, and then down to three its going to punch you in the balls.

A had a 3d printer for prototyping and decided to develop an adapter one day for the meta quest 3 when it first launched. I ended up selling probably $4k worth of the adapters until I eventually just got tired of selling an adapter maybe once a week. Started off strong, and had people trying to compete, but they just couldn't and eventually the product demand slowed. It was never really my intention to make money selling 3d prints but just tried to see if I could sell some and it worked better than I expected.

My next product I designed in probably 30 minutes and just threw it on amazon with some ads to see if it would sell and ive been selling them for probably 8 months now. About 30-50 sales per month it seems like. $.08 worth of plastic for $10.

My next product im launching is much more complicated. It involves switches, wires, custom pcb's etc etc. Its basically all products I source from China but I manufacture the housing in house and then assemble everything. To manufacture the housing with injection molds would probably cost the Chinese or competitors hundreds of thousands of dollars. Too much risk for them. Even more me I might not see any profit, but what I manufacture works better than anything the competition sells. Even if I captured the whole market, it might only make a $100k profit. Good enough for me, but not enough meat for others.

So basically now im trying to get into multi component 3d printed products in niche markets but with a bunch of sku's. Theres a goldilocks zone where 3d printing is going to beat out injection molds and thats what im trying to develop products for. Low sales volume but better products.
