My high school was in sort of a shitty part of the outskirts of Lisbon. Not terribly shitty, but furthest from the best than the worse.

And yet we had Americans (mostly girls) aged 15-18 from (fucking) Texas, Minnesota, New York... who were here on exchange programs.
Some alone, some with their families. Typically they were here via their own schools.

Then I went to university, both undergrad and post grad (two different but both in Lisbon, both the top ones for their areas).
We had Americans too. But less.
These American were again mostly girls, aged 18-25 and they went "to study abroad", always without their families.

We also had the odd American 25-35 study and working but these were generally retards who considered themselves free spirits and were here out of their own volition and pay for it. These ones lived in the houses they rented.

We also have English teachers, but rarely from America.
