I liked Aliens and Terminator 2 a lot, can't really put my finger on why, but I do.
The Girls und Panzer movies are also great, so were the first and second Patlabor movies albeit their stories were ehh at best. Fucking wind? Come on man.

Palahniuk is legit tho. He used to write instruction manuals for things for the military or something like that, and you can kinda see that reflected in the prose of his books. Also I read that he would get ideas for his stories from hanging out at bars and listen to people tell stories. So as far as stealing stories from people, I mean I believe that's probably the extent of it
