I think you mistake the perceived purpose of college and the actual/intended purpose of college. The perceived purpose of college is this boomer-esque, high school teacher salesman, David Bartholomae-esque approach to 'becoming the very best version of yourself' through the power of learning and transformative experiences, etc. which are high-minded ideals, but ultimately are not the point and purpose of higher education. Essentially, the entire post-K12 college academic system everywhere is like an inverted pyramid that is the opposite of merit. This is particularly true of the liberal arts but also, the hard sciences/STEM and even engineering have become bloated, far out of proportion to the needs of society, civilization overall or most industries. Far to many people with degrees, 'paper' for one thing or other and no one with actual expertise on how to actually _do_ things.
Many of these things about the rot, bloat and ivory tower decay of the overall intelligentsia and educated establishment of the west were pointed out by Ted K in his writings.

AI wasn't a thing YET, but in my last year of university I had one great professor whose entire exam consisted of tying things from separate lessons together (whether comparing, arguing one against the other etc)
This is probably not possible for all subjects, but I found it great, since it also fucks over the midwits who can only do rote memorization.
Unsurprisingly, we had people from 5 prior class generations taking the exams with us trying to finally get their degree

I agree and I feel like more people need to be comfortable with getting the answers professors ask wrong in class. Like that is the exact place that you want to get it wrong. Classes aren't fun when you sit there and listen to the professor talk for an hour and a half. We could get a lot more done and learn more if we were discussing what we were learning and attempting to teach what we learned to someone else at a later date or even after the lecture.
