Combustion engines are pumped out by robots now and there’s simply no way an EV will compete because even if you drive the labor costs down to almost nothing, you still have to put shit tons of valuable materials into making an EV. A modern combustion engine takes far less to make, because all the energy is stored in molecules pumped out fo the ground, not finely processed alloys and rare earths etc. It’s just the way it is. The government rebates were always just a wealth transfer scam for insider trading and does not actually reflect any real benefits of EV or combustion vehicles.

My brother-in-law was thinking about buying a dozen of them to replace his fleet of F150s when they reach their effective end of life. He has a large landscaping business which is located in what once was a light manufacturing plant, so it has access to a ton of electrical capacity. For what his business does, local landscaping, the range of the Cybertruck is great and he can plug them all in at night when electricity is cheap. No more handing out credit cards to the kind of shady characters that work landscape jobs or needing some teen to take the trucks to the gas station.
After crunching all the numbers, the much higher capital costs of the Cybertruck over new basic ICE F150 dwarfed the operational cost savings. Since he has lots of excess electrical capacity at his building, I'll see if he wants to do the calculations again for the Slate but I suspect that the Slate truck, while good for suburban normies, won't fit the needs of his landscape business.
