Hospitals are basically set up to work like this:
At triage you're given a quick, cursory evaluation.
Are you in imminent danger of death without treatment?
No? Then you can wait.
The frustration comes from the fact that they don't tell you that they already determined you're not in danger and don't require urgent medical attention--because people get angry and scream at nurses when they tell them that.

The nurse at triage took one look at you and knew you weren't dying of a burst appendix and thus it was either a soft tissue injury, a kidney stone or a stomach ache. Then they just have to wait for the doctors and nurses busy saving lives to have enough spare time to run the tests that they're required to run before they're allowed to give you anything.

The system 'works' in that people don't really die or worsen waiting for treatment and the hospital's success rate is actually rather high, but it's an awful experience. The core issue is that there are not enough doctors, and the system requires doctors to consult on every test and treatment in the hospital no matter how minor. So if you aren't dying, you wait until everyone in greater danger goes first. It's callous, but that's the reality of triaging. If you stop breathing they can always rush in a cart and pump oxygen down your throat but the dude with a gash on his thigh bleeding out can't wait. We don't have enough doctors because doctors in canada don't make enough to offset the cost of their student loans to become doctors, which forces them to seek for-profit healthcare work abroad.

Stories like are 100% fictional though. People dying on waiting lists basically never happens and the few cases where it does are typically death by something unrelated to their condition--like a car crash. I don't really know why americans have this whole propaganda apparatus built around slandering our healthcare system but for better or worse it's not failing to save lives.

Most hospital food is delivered by large vendors under province wide service contracts managed by mega corps like BGIS. All that counts is whether the vendor provides roughly the correct quantity of meals at the right times, so the food is small portions of pure industrial slop. Like many aspects of the health system it has been optimized to provide the most value to service provider shareholders at the cost of patient experience. Prisoners do in fact get far superior food in terms of quantity and quality to keep the population docile. Food is prepared fresh on site daily by in house cooks, to achieve this and for securiry reasons.

yeah, theres something very nasty about a lot of the nurses here. they are rude, condescending and out right disrespectful. i was waiting in the ER one time (nothing much, had to get a shot and have no family doctor lol) and one of them was loudly berating some old woman who could hardly hobble to her seat in tones like only a total bitch would use to even a child. it was so disgusting that some jumped up little cunt barely out of college was treating that old lady. its the same shit with the doctors and it goes from top to bottom in the health system - zero respect for the people, because at the end of the day, the people dont fucking matter to them. we aren't customers that can take our business elsewhere - we are subjects of the government who can, at most, write and harshly worded letter.

then where is there a huge shortage of doctors? there are years long waiting lists just to get a primary care doctor so you dont have to go to the ER for everything. they can't even attract foreign doctors anymore. there were a couple in a nearby town bu they fucked off home.

I had a family member with a real life threatening emergency a couple years ago where they had to stay in a Toronto ER for a couple days waiting for a bed in the relevant part of the hospital to open up (not enough beds). The rest of my family would take shifts keeping them company so I was frequently coming and going through the waiting room, every time it was 1) more people than seats and 2) what you describe above. Every time.
Last I checked there not only isn't a new hospital being built in Ontario but there isn't even one planned. Meanwhile they've flooded us with millions of Tim Hortons workers.

The fundamental issue is the Canadian system makes it extremely difficult to practice medicine. The "Working as intended" triage system you described puts incredible strain on ER doctors as it is incredibly inefficient with doctors being set up to fail as the process bottleneck. No matter what you pay ER doctors no one can work under those conditions long term. Lets not even get into the bullshit non hospitalists have to deal with. Whenever anyone attempts to advocate for necessary changes, status quo defenders rush in to shut it down and also ask for more money

Family practices suffer a lot of issues of their own. There aren't enough doctors around, so there's a shortage of practices accepting new patients. And at least in Ontario there's a fucked up administrative system that actively encourages practices to silently drop patients when they seek treatment outside of the practice (ie going to a walkin when you can't get an appt at the family doctor, going to the hospital for a genuine medical emergency).

I processed at least a few cases where a family clinic accidentally unpersoned someone because the DEI hire sitting behind the desk didn't realize that the medical records they keep are the main medical records for that patient in the province and that deleting them just removes the patient's entire medical history from public record. They're responsible for keeping those records indefinitely, or transferring them either to the province or another clinic when necessary but nobody explains this to these people so you end up with folks that can't get their Angina meds because their prescription lapsed, their family doctor dropped them without saying anything, the records of the months of testing they went through to prove they need the meds were deleted and they can't find a new doctor to vouch for them. Once again, everything flows from the root issue that there aren't enough doctors and those we have are strained financially

But the cunt wasn't a citizen and wanted free fucking health care for her disease (we know its STD's) ridden family. I pay literally $40 to see my GP like 3-4 times a year. The issue arises when all the chronically ill elderly pricks (who have spent not a single minute of their lives getting healthy) want to see a doctor for the most trivial and benign shit.

Its ok, I still have my army pension and I'm actually glad to be away from that place. What actually got me was I had a patient high on amphetamines in a room. He tried to physically attack me. Yes. The system is broken BECAUSE it lacks the expensive inputs, because nobody of a lack of political will. The healthcare system is like an engine, we're running on raw crude and ethanol right now because the fucker in the driver's seat thinks the price of gas is too high. Every problem, personal and institutional, comes from a lack of doctors, and the cause of the lack of doctors is financial incentives vs the cost of education.
Once again, these are deliberately misleading stats designed to push political agendas. Every government loves cutting healthcare funding to fund their platform and these kinds of articles exist to manufacture consent for the cuts.
How? They include all waiting lists and all deaths as healthcare waiting list deaths, regardless of what they were waiting for or how they died. Most of those people are waiting for non-medically necessary tests, like allergy tests or bloodwork to address chronic period pain and then they die of thinks like car accidents. They even do totally disingenuous shit like claim someone who dies during treatment for terminal cancer had bloodwork pending. Most terminal illnesses will receive tests daily and will almost always have a requisition in queue because we schedule the next one as soon as the previous is finished. Oh my god, Abdullah died from stage 4 lung cancer waiting for his next X-ray scheduled for tomorrow after receiving an X-ray yesterday, the system has failed.

We have our own internal statistic that thoroughly track the per-patient wait times for all forms of testing and treatment and we constantly cross-reference them with autopsy data on causes of death. The number of times a patient has actually died of a disease while they were in queue to be treated for it (or receive tests to diagnose it) is so fantastically rare I would have to look back to pre-pandemic records to even find one.

i dont know what they do but ive seen young mothers with their 4 year old kid get lots of attention, doctor time etc at the ER because his nose was snotty. i mean sure, it might mean he was about to get fucking rabies or something, but the chances are its just a cold and he needed to go to bed to a warm drink.

A lot of the staff/admin are literal NPC's and aren't capable of thinking on the fly, they just blindly follow policy and flow charts. Currently the new thing is no restraints unless absolutely necessary and they really don't care how many people get hurt cause of it.

Because in the west, public hospitals are no longer about fast admission and getting patients out so they don't come back. They admit people for the most trivial and absurd reasons. Like people literally leave their family and friends in the ED and claim "I am not coping" and walk away. So these demented fucks who should have died 20 years ago, are given a bed, free food, all the allied health referrals they will ever need and then spend MONTHS waiting for a nursing home.

pretty much. ideally you have your family on the books of a general practitioner/family doctor that you go to if you have an issue. you should be able to get an appointment within a couple days if you're lucky. there are walk in clinics in the cities which take the strain off the ER at the main hospitals. if you dont have a family doctor and you're not near a big city, you only have the option of an ER at the closest hospital.

its first come first served to get on the doctor lists. there are very few doctors located actually in the rural areas. the nearest one to me, if i was even on their books, is about 60km and takes an hour to get in. thats fine...but theres no way to get on their books lol

This will likely result in a privatized system as US companies swoop in to fill the gap and an end to public healthcare in Canada entirely.

Is there anything in between walk in clinics and the ER? I got into a car accident some time back and never bothered with getting to a doctor because there wasn't any proper options. Walk in clinics all seem to be immigrant doctors of questionable competence who just prescribe antibiotics I figured they'd just send me to the ER anyway. It wasn't serious So I wasn't willing to waste my whole day sitting in the ER for some doctor to tell me you're fine go take some Advil.

dont know really. you can get some kinds of scans done in private clinics if thats what you wanted but if you dont have a family doctor to head to then yeah, walk in and ER is about it i think. here in NB theres a phone based thing where you will get to talk to a nurse and they can maaybe set you up an appointment at a hospital to save you sitting in ER all day, but no guarantees on that. depends what you need and who you get.
