We let ours free range but the Foxes and Yotes up here have taken a few from us over the years. We need a small dog with a large invisible fence around our property to secure our chickens.

A few inches of wood chips and Diatomaceous earth can get rid of shit smell inside a coop.

Meh I've seen live chickens go for 6-12 bucks at local auctions all the time. No need to start packaging hundreds of chickens to compete with your local grocery store's factorio farm.

chickens are super easy and they handle cold well. my coop is 8ftx4ft and easy fits 7 chickens. i only put 2 nesting boxes but they only use one. you will need to make a run for them to go outside unless you are going to let them free range. the main thing is your coop must be secure from foxes, weasels, raccoons, big house cats ect. keep it simple, it should not take very much money to raise chickens once you make the investment in a coop. i made my coop out of 8 pallets 2 2x4's and some scraps of tin

My advice? Free range your chickens build your coop near the water source you have for them. Buy a heat lamp so your baby chickens will survive the winter.

I'm doing it! In the process of building my coop now. It's almost complete. Their run is enough for them right now and I have some night time shelter for them in there before I give them access to the coop.
Got a dozen eggs layers and a regular crop of 6-10 meat birds that I'll butcher every few months. With just these chickens and the gardening I'm already elbow deep in, I should gain independence from the grocery store by the end of the year. If I'm successful, good luck to any of you fucks seeing me out there in public. I'll never go back to the zoo again

Chickens are great and easy to take care of. The downside may be that you need to research them and be your own vet and know what to do when an egg gets egg bound or when they eat something bad. One time my chickens ate an entire foam pool noodle that was strapped to a handtruck for moving stuff without damaging.they stopped laying eggs bc of it. I had to pour mineral oil on their food to help them digest and poop out all the foam bits. It worked and they went back to laying eggs like nothing happened. They're dumb enough to eat anything they find like a shiny piece of broken glass in the dirt that would kill them,so make sure their area is safe and also fenced off to protect from predators.

My flock usually roosted in one of my trees in the evening but all I had to do is open the door to the coop and they roosters would go in and the hens would follow. Thiose birds are smart stupid.

Free Range chickens can survive if you live in an area with enough bugs. Especially a place that's summer year round. Winter, no.
