I've been invited to the UK. Where can I stay in London where I won't get imprisoned for defending myself from a gentlemanly rocket scientist? Looking online made it seem as if most of London is surrounded by bad areas, making them difficult to avoid.

It's an absolute shithole pretty much everywhere in London, places like South Tottenham etc, you will think you are either in Africa, Pakistan, or some other Islamic shithole
Don't go. I worked in London for an entire year. Legit did not meet a single British there, I think they gone extinct, replaced my mutts.

Like another anon said, go somewhere rural like the cotswolds, lake district, new forest etc. Anywhere but fucking Londonistan. In fact, avoid all cities. The heart of England is in the countryside, not urban hills capes.
It's not that bad honestly, as long as you avoid the black areas. The city centre is pretty safe as far as big cities go and is like 85% white, and a large amount of the non whites there are Chinese and Indian tourists which aren't that bad. Cities like Paris and New York are overall more nigraified and consequently far more dangerous than London
Most of Central London is pretty sanitary for the most part actually. Places like Hampstead, Richmond upon Thames, Bayswater, Chelsea are pretty posh and are pleasant.
Remember that you are statistically more likely to encounter violence in burgerland than the worst places in the UK.

Nah do not go to London, go to the UK's original Capital York. 99% white and the rest are Asian qt tourists. Yorkshire folk are the warmest people you'll meet and it's 100% British, plus there's roman structures everywhere and it's honestly wonderful for shopping and eating.

Stay in central London. You can find cheap accommodation if you look online.
London, like most tourist traps, is going to be expensive. People will try to fleece you for money. Be vigilant.
Don't go to South London, You will stand out as a yank and will be robbed and if you put up a fight, most likely cut across the face with a razor blade. Nothing to really see in South London, maybe a few museums along the River Thames, but that's it. Visit them during the day, you'll be fine.
East London is full of paki's, so avoid as well. Nothing to see there anyway.
West London is the shopping centre but has bordering estates (similar to the projects in the US) and is full of crack heads. Make sure you know where you are going.
North London is a fair distance from the centre, so you won't have any reason to visit it.
Avoid prostitutes as they will set you up to be robbed.
Don't buy drugs from the street, you will get ripped off and/ or mugged
Don't let your credit card out of your sight if you are paying for stuff with it, as it will get cloned.
If you stay in the tourist areas you will be fine, keep your valuables out of sight as pick pockets are rife. If you do get mugged, just give them your shit, as it's not worth getting stabbed over.
It's a few years since I've been there, but my recommendation is Cheltenham.

Don't listen to the negative posters. West London is really nice. Nice neighborhoods:

-Soho
-Marylebone
-Chelsea
-Paddington
-Kensington
-Notting Hill
Basically stick to the affluent areas and you'll be fine and have a good time. The same rule applies to many cities. You can always check neighborhoods out on google street view to get a good idea of the type of people that are in those areas.
South London isn't even that bad. Some nice boozers. Used to like heading into the Windmill in Brixton or the Amersham Arms in New Cross. Although, of course, it is still London, which is to say it's depressing and shit.
