Why it doesn't work:
1.) Most jurisdictions prohibit them. My county went from "You can have 2 RVs on your property and you can live in them with no permits required except a legal septic system" to "You can have 1 RV on your property and you can't live in it for more than 6 months out of the year." overnight, with no vote. 2.) You will need to find and purchase land where living in one of these is allowed. Land is very expensive. Land, anywhere within an hour or two of a town/city where you could actually get a job, is going to be $50K or much higher for less than an acre. If you're going to blow all that money it makes sense for most people to get a giant loan and build a house.
3.) Depreciating asset. A lot of manufactured/modular homes are built stronger than site built houses. But these travel trailers are built of matchsticks and foam. You'll never be able to get your money back when you sell it.
It's just like the Tiny House people. Yeah. Fine. Great. An energy efficient house that forces you to live a minimalist lifestyle so you can save tons of money. Cool. Window frames collect condensation, my roof vent frame rotted out not because water leaked IN, but because the metal inside accumulated moisture which seeped into the surrounding paneling.

It’s not though, it’s as low as $250 a month in some RV parks and on average about $500 a month. You get electricity, water, a drain to dump your black water, and you often gets amenities. Plus they have bathroom facilities if you don’t want to use the small RV one. There is a fridge, a stove/oven, storage space, usually a table and multiple beds. The downside is the cheap construction but if you don’t abuse it and a tornado doesn’t come by, it can last a while and then you just get another. If you want to live like that. RV parks are usually high trust so long as you avoid areas near problem demographics. One or two people could seriously live comfortably and cheaply out of one for years and it’s infinitely superior the California communal bunk or pod and has more room than a lot of overpriced apartments in NYC. There are people who make good money and live like this because they like it and saving more than enough money to retire comfortably (in an actual house or and RV if they want to)

Like you I have some friends and family, but I live alone with my gf, she doesn't go OTR with me, my company allows it, and I've thought about it, but A it would negate the need to keep paying rent on our apartment and B I'd probably hate it after a couple of weeks. But the option is there with most companies after you put some time in (seeing as the company would be absorbing more liability in the cabin during an accident, even though ironically the incidences of at-fault accidents decrease when a truck driver has a passenger with him).

I socialize mainly through vidya when I'm on my 36, other days I'm too tired and just relax with a movie and fall asleep. If you're even a little bit antisocial you will love it. If you're just introverted you'll enjoy it for the first 6 months, but after a while it will grow on you. It is a lonely man's job. If you don't have your CDL yet, do not go to a private school or company training. I got my CDL at my community college for half the cost ($2800) and they didn't require upfront payment. It's also generally a better education as well (around 140 hours of combined classroom instruction and drive time.) You won't feel like a cog in the license mill like you will at private schools, or company sponsored training who are just interested in you getting behind the wheel to make them money as soon as possible. About 10 years ago I lived in a rv trailer for a while. Bought it for 6k from a cool old dude that took care of it. Trailer, not too big, kind of like a cramped studio. There were plenty of mobile home parks that also had rv lots with hookups (water, sewage, electric). Basically a concrete slab in the dirt big enough for a trailer to sit on. I paid $300 a month for the lot and all hookups except electric that was paid through electric company. No internet so I had the cable company dig a trench and feed a cable right out to my lot for me. Cool guy, no extra charge. Main downside was having to use the public laundry to clean clothes, but they also had public pool and gym. Everyone minded their own business or was friendly and nice (even the crackheads). Had to get a window ac unit for when it was hot and a space heater for when it was cold but they both worked great and were extremely cheap. Great way to save money to invest and/or take time to learn a new industry you want to switch to. Or just chill I guess. This was 10 years ago like I said but I'm sure similar situations are possible if you make it happen

Almost every motor home/trailer over 10 years old has a bad mold issue hidden somewhere.
These make great trailer rebuild projects, if you aren't using it for RVing, you can strip it down and use it for moving stuff.
Interesting thing is the number of RV parks in major metro centers. It's actually a good way to save a lot of money. Negative is if you move frequently in 10y some will not be allowed in certain parks or resorts but you can usually get by if it still looks good. Clean and condition the roof every 6 months at least, use coil cleaner on your ac twice a year and never leave your black tank open and when you do a flush out once or twice a week really let it do it's thing and flush. They are so modern on inside like a tiny condo with all amenities. If you are in a warm weather climate get the dual AC. You don't need a truck to haul it you just hire ppl and can usually pay someone in the park to haul it to your new spot cheaper. 10 years in one even in the cold snap in TX that killed ppl. I did this in my parent's basement. Natural stone walls in part of it that would occasionally weep during heavy rainfall. Put 6 140mm case fans, ran off 5v so they were basically just wafting air, and it solved the problem immediately. Made everything all nice with 3d printed bezels and guards, and they look like they were designed to be there.
At one point i was going to add an arduino and a humidity sensor to have them automatically come on... but at 5v they draw basically no power (< 2 watts for the entire setup), and they are almost silent, so i just leave them on 24/7.
remember to manually empty your feces into a nearby river or storm drain every few days

So you want to live in an RV? Sounds cool Right? You won't have to pay as many bills! Think again:
First off, all the new RV's are shoddily made with modern standards. They aren't going to last 5 years without needing significant repairs. Thing about new ones is most banks will finance them so you can pay for it your whole life with a 0 dollar downpayment. So that's out of the question. Let's look at older RV's. It's a lot like buying a classic car except even harder to repair. If you find one in good working condition, it's going to be anywhere from 10-50 thousand dollars. You don't want to buy one that needs any kind of repair because they aren't easily repaired by mechanics and the structural, electrical and plumbing issues can only be jury rigged as most were build with a unibody form factor, so if the roof goes you need to either find someone willing to shoddily patch it, or patch it yourself which is a custom job and could run you upwards of 10k. Same goes for if any of the windows on the shelter are broken.
Ok so now you have your RV, where are you going to park it? Lot rentals can run anywhere in the way of 300-1500 dollars. It's illegal where I am to live in an RV on your own property, you can work out rental arrangements with people by living in their yards or driveways, but they won't have water and power hookups like a lot rental would and it's still technically illegal. Without lot rental you're going to need to be running generators and buying water at wal mart, which again can be about 800 a month and is unreliable. Either way you have to buy propane to run the stove. In Canada at least you can stay anywhere on crown land without it becoming illegal until after 14 days, so you'll constantly be putting wear on the tires, engine and spending a fortune on gas because these things are not designed for fuel efficiency.

Have electric fireplace and remove it with screwdriver, unplug fireplace and plug in nice room heater in outlet because it's a dedicated circuit- vital for any heater because most outlets share the same circuit and outlet will melt and cause a fire- but it will run you out of here. Never plug in a space heater in an RV that is not it's own dedicated circuit. You have been warned.
Now it's winter, RV's were not designed for the cold s you're going to have to work out a custom solution to heat and insulate the thing. Cheapest method is a space heater, skirting the bottom and blanketing/tarping the rest but now you're living in a makeshift tent that can't budge.
Let's meet your neighbors. You've got the local methhead who is constantly going to be mooching and whining at your door to do him favors and run him around on errands. His baby mama needs formula and he needs you to drive him to the gas station, only thing he didn't mention is he's also picking up his crank and has now put you in an illegal situation. You've got the gang member who is paranoid and hyper aggressive and starts trying to drive you out because he didn't like the way you looked at him. He's constantly banging on your windows at night, sabotaging your RV and telling the other neighbors you're a cop. He may go so far as to threaten you with a weapon. Now you've got the welfare leeches. Anything they can get off of you means one more dollar they scan spend on themselves, so they are going to be at you constantly for the pettiest of items. Hope you don't mind parting with your silverware, either willingly or unwillingly because if you don't pay the toll they'll take offense and feel justified in robbing you blind in the night. The police won't give a shit about any of this because they see you as a worthless bum. Hope you said goodbye to all your friends because they won't want to associate with a guy who lives in an RV.
I'd say you're better off living in cheap apartments, but you're going to have all the same problems except now you have a charlatan landlord trying to scam you on every repair as well. New apartments are nice because crackheads can't afford them, but again they are so shoddily built the thin layer of plastic over all the particle board is going to peel off in under 5 years and the landlord expects you to pay.

The RV thing can sort of work here in the US, but youre subject to harassment by police/other vagrants if you dont have somewhere to park it. Also, you had better know at least the basics of working on cars (being able to identify problems by noise, and point to where theyre coming from and how to fix them, so not really the basics). Gas is also ridiculously expensive if you need to move long distances. This is why so many RV vagrants park once and live and die in that same spot for the next 10 years.

You'll never be cold enough. You'll never be warm enough. Constant cabin fever. You still a car to get to work. There's a bunch more things to go wrong. Every repair is expensive and convoluted while you've got other things to do. You don't have a garage for projects and nothing can wait until the weekend. If you get into any minor vehicle accident with a RV it's destroyed and you're homeless.
One thing though, if you do have a property to park it on in 99% of the US (excluding big cities; including rural areas of blue states such as California) you better believe that regardless of whatever laws are in place if you look poor/crazy enough the only thing that will ever get you to move is by actually getting raided/towed. I have met several people that have lived in their RVs for years without moving, in said rural areas.
